Re: Am i in over my head? rust?!!!!!

Honestly its sorta hard to tell by the pics how expansive the rust is.
Pull the carpet and look from there. The story is much more clear from the inside than the underside. Its not uncommon at all to replace the entire floorpan. I forget where you can get them from, but they are available. Its a bit of a pain, but in these cars, its almost a given when you buy a midwestern one.

The real question is if the rot goes up the firewall or into the door sill. If it does, your starting to have some structural questions. If not, I'd say simply strip it, cut out the floorpan (or partial floorpan) and weld in some donor metal.

My last 'bird had rot that went from the door sill, through the floorpan up to the firewall. I tried controlling the rust, but didn't have the right tools at the time. It ended up twisting real bad and was sent to the scrapper.

Good luck! Pull up the carpet and see what you've got. Repost those pics if you want.

looked like it had a rocker panel pretty much gone, id be scared to try to put too much power on that. My advise would be to find a sucker and sell it

Re: Am i in over my head? rust?!!!!!

You can take the seats and rug out to see how bad it is under there. Then you could cut where the rust/holes are and weld in a new panle of it you have any fiberglass skills, you could lay some fiberglass mat and resin on the inner floor to cover the holes and rust just dont forget to grind the rust off first b4 the fiberglass.

Re: Am i in over my head? rust?!!!!!

Is it me or does it look like the original floor pan rusted out or was cut out and a new/other one was laid over it and one side was duct taped to seal? That's how it looks to me.

Re: Am i in over my head? rust?!!!!!

Mine is worse and plan to completely replace both of my floorpans and por-15 them. My rust edges up to my pinch welds and have been told this is fine. It will cost me $500 for removal and install. But that's from a buddies buddy so...and all he does is floorpans and sheetmetal work so its literally nothing and has done this before many many times.

HawksThirdGenParts carries them but for $300ea. I have found them for $270ea somewhere else, but maybe our TGO discount will take care of the difference. Also wonder what shipping from HTP would be.

Re: Am i in over my head? rust?!!!!!

I redid my drivers floor. I cut out one from a donor car(Partial pan) and welded it in. I did overlap the old pan but I cut out all of the rust and I sealed both sides after welding. Actually, I have a few loose ends to tie up. I have used quite a bit of seam sealer. The car is sitting in the garage until its all sealed. Its definately not a professional clean job but I undertook it to get the experience. I am not trying to make it a show car but I do want to have a decent looking car that is not rusting out from under me. I would say if you dont have any major rust in the front shock tower areas or to your subframe, and have the extra money to put in pans, then go for it. You could sell it and use the money to buy a rust free car but in our area, even if they say its rust free, you will find rust in the usual places.
