Check images around 109 in the 2nd series. It sure looks like a C6 push button trigger right there.

Re: C6 style door handles

There is no lever on a C6, there's a thumb/finger pad on the inside. The black part is just plastic trim.

Re: C6 style door handles

IIRC, a guy on these forums names Neil, I think, did just that on his ride. Instead of the sensor, he used a couple of hood latches and just hid them there to pull for opening the doors. It was quite clever IMO.

Here is Neil's:

I think it looks great!
and the link to his build.

beware, it's around 40 pages! page 6 shows some of the in-progress pictures from the door handles.

Re: C6 style door handles

i think i want to make mine part of the door, like it appears to be on the c6, that black trim piece would be operational. the handle isnt the hard part though. i looked inside the door and the stock handle pushes a rod down on the latch, id have to figure out a way to turn a horizontal motion into a vertical motion, it would probably be easy with rope and pullys but i think the metal rods would be more reliable?

Re: C6 style door handles

Just make the door skin handle piece swing up & out instead of forward & it'll be swinging the same as a stock handle. Then use a bell-crank lever action to latch/unlatch the door latch, and it'll act like the stock handle.

Re: C6 style door handles

Just use a power lock actuator hooked up to a high rate return spring. It will pop out with the electricity and be pulled back in by the spring. This way it's all electric and you can just use the finger pad from the vette to continue the voltage to pop the lock and the spring will pull it back in retunring it to a natural state, again ready to pop again later.

Re: C6 style door handles

I personally have not checked out a C6 myself, but I do have good reason to think that its door handles are not 100% electric. I'd be surprised to learn that they are 100% electric.

In the case of a car wreck & the electrical system is compromised, that could render an electric door nonfunctional, which means Fire/EMS personnel could not easily gain access to the person(s) inside.

While many people do shave door handles, that means it is the owners "problem", not GMs problem. In other words....A person could possibly sue GM for designing such a problem for accessing a person for medical attention.

So I have always suspected the C6s had a mechanical action door handle inside the notch area.

Re: C6 style door handles

There is no mechanical outside of a solenoid inside the door. I don't knwo this from personal experience outside of the fact that I work at chevy, the door has an electronic button under black seal outside so that when the car is locked, you still hear/feel it press in but not open cause it's locked. Also inside the car now is an electronic button to pop the door open, so there is no mechanical handle inside either. Cadillac has a similar thing in the CTS coupe. If they have to they will break glass to get inside, otherwise there is some other safety mechanism that i'm not positive of at this point.

Re: C6 style door handles

Just went out and checked our CTS Coupe, and it has manual door release handle down on the floor board, if there was to be an accident, and there was an electrical failure, you can pull the handle yourself or emergency help if serious enough can break the window and easily reach the handle. Obviously if that was the door of impact they are jaws of lifing you out of that side either way. You would have to hook something up similar to a hood release cable through the door electrical tubes into the door latch to create that safety feature for yourself.

Re: C6 style door handles

That is a pretty dub design of GM.

Break the glass? Not every Fire/EMS rescue person is going to have a glass breaker on their person, which could mean a trip back to the truck to get it, or hope that someone else has one.

Not to mention learning about what is standard on 99.999% of every other vehicle ever built. Just adds to rescue time, which could already be limited by fuel leakage/patient condition.

Sorry, but the CTS/C6 electronic doors are junk, in my eyes. I no longer want either of those cars.

Re: C6 style door handles

CTS sedan is normal, I agree with you, just one more pull handle to add to the floor as opposed to adding like say a trigger mechanism under the already massivle door panel handle. IDK, i didn't design these cars, I just sell them lol.

C6's have the same manual release handle next to the driver's seat on the floor in case the electrical system isn't working.

As well as pull straps in the trunk.
