i got some small surface rust and some all the way through on my car, and the thing i could suggest that if ur floors arent completly screwed just use some sheet metal. its cheap and its bendable

Yes, finding a clean donor car is your best bet. That's what I did with my 79.

If you only have a few small holes, you'd better do just like 91Firebug a said.

Re: body work (floors)

If you only have spots of severe rust get yourself a couple of pieces of sheet metal and a grinder/cutting wheel and get to welding. If you have more than 50% of holes then get a donor floor or a repladement pan from any one of a number of vendors (hawks.com etc.)

Re: body work (floors)

Someone should do a FAQ, and the moderators should be linking to it everytime someone asks a question that's been asked over and over again already.

To the OP. With pictures we can help you give our opinion, but you can't do anything without first making a visual check and knowing what to look for. Second, if the damage is bad enough you need to determine if you're capable of doing metal on metal replacement or know someone who is, or are willing to pay someone who is.

Re: body work (floors)

well, if you decide to go the sheet metal route, what you want to do is get some 20-22 guage steel sheet, and use that. you can cut out the exacte shape out of some cardboard, ( so that you know it will fit after taking some measurements a couple of times to be sure ). make sure that it's a little larger so you can shape it to the contour of the floor shape. you can use a ball peen hammer to do that with.

once you have it all in place, you can either weld it, or use rivits, and expoxy to finish off the repair, ( the epoxy seals the repair completely ). your choice.
you should then do a little under coating on the repaired area after that and hopefully that'll take care of your repair just fine.

as it's been said, ask yourself before hand whether or not you have the neccassary skill for such a job. if not ask a friend who does to help you with it, or just save up the money and have someone do the job for you. either way be safe, and take your time. you'll be glad that yo did in the loong run.

best wishes with this project. let us know how you make out. show us some pics of the final project. we got your back bro. *S*

Awesome, I just started the floor work on my 89 RS, its in the same front drivers side only though, so far ripped out the carpet and all the interior. I look forward to following your repair/replacement work.

18 or 22 gauge? And what did you use or are gonna use to secure everything before you do the cutting?

correct, gauge means thickness. and he probably means securing the metal before cutting so u get a much cleaner cut...and that sounds good!

Oh man I have tons of pics let me see if I can upload some to my comp. I've ripped out everything and started ripping the motor apart, previous owner like the majority of p.o's lied and did crappy repairs to the roof with hot glue, and painted everything inside white too

Haha yeah, I felt the bigger fool for not doing my homework before getting this one, but hey I lived and learned and got an ear full from the old lady about it. I guess for a partial trade I can't be wrong, and if I'm wrong then I must hate being right

Re: body work (floors)

befor you get to far in, take the front fenders off and look at the bottom of the front door posts. Mine were rusted out and the rust carried on into what I thought were good floors. with the fenders off I could look into the foot wells through the door posts. I supported the car on stands at the suspension then jacked at the trans crossmember till the doors closed nice then cut out all the rust well into the foot wells and built and welded in new metal. door close nice now and the t tops are a lot less squeeky

Re: body work (floors)

I would be considering the new floors that are avalible you dont have to replace the whole floors, but you can cut out and use what you need. If you don't have a welder ypu sould by a little wire feed with mig ability. thay can be found for $300 or $400 and with 110V if ypu don't have 240V.

just about forgot. While you have it apart take a look at the rear footwells where the rear subframe welds to the floor that is a rust problem as well as the front of the front door post

below the botton door hinge. to see the hole I had to remove the plastic inner fender from the front wheel well then look behind the fender below the hinge area.

Re: body work (floors)
