Rear Tail Light Assembly Question--key for hatch too short?

Hey guys,

Some time in the past, the previous owner of my 84 T/A put in a tail light section from an 88 GTA along with the front bumber and ground effects. The problem this creates is that the key cylinder to the rear hatch is recessed and I can't get the key to turn (The key goes in but the key gets stuck in the "hole"...basically it's not long enough. It's never been a problem because I've got the power hatch lock release but if that ever goes out, I'm screwed. Does anyone have an idea on how to remedy this? can I get a lock cylinder from an 88?

Simple ... lock cylinders are different length ... did this to my 84 and replaced the lock cylinder as well as it protrudes another 1/4 - 1/2 inch (can't remember how much).

So you replaced it with a lock cylinder from the later model?

Correct, at the time I changed all lock cylinders so just got a kit for a later model 3rd Gen ... 85 or 86 and later as they use the "taller" lock cylinder back there besides the height it's identical.

Will my original key work or will I have to get another one? I'd hate to have 2, one for the doors and one for the hatch.

That was one reason I changed all the locks at the same time ... maybe you can get the cylinder coded for your key but not sure you just have to ask when you buy the cylinder

I'll check with classic industries or year one about getting some new ones.
