Wow I screwed up

So just to put it out there, I thinned out the Single Stage paint way to much. Now I have runs, but started sanding them out along with some orange peel. My question is after sanding, and putting 2 more coats on will it be okay? Or did I just really screw the pooch. This is my first paint job ever!

Re: Wow I screwed up

single stage is garbage, you screwed the pooch by spraying your car single. you can try recoating but you probably will see it, we had a guy that sanded the single stage he ran then re coated then cleared over it, that came out OK

Re: Wow I screwed up

Sweet, I wanted to do this all on my own and was told the SS paint was the easiest. I am going to tell this guy he is full of it! I am hoping that it turns out okay. Anything is better then the Calico color it was.

Re: Wow I screwed up

ah. well i didnt mean to come off mean, Single stage is easier cuz you spray just that and your done. personally i ALWAYS use basecoat/clearcoat systems. for reference, Maaco's base line paint job is single stage. single stage looks GREAT for about 2-3 years but looses it's luster fast and requires alot more up keep. and in my opinion, single stage is harder to spray, you can wetsand and buff orange peel and runs out of clear and make it looks awesome, not much room for error with single stage

Re: Wow I screwed up

whooow you had me really scared it was going to look really bad. I stopped painting after 2 coats, cause I didn't want the runs getting darker. I am hoping it turns out okay. It is by no means a show car. Just a daily driver.

Re: Wow I screwed up

id wetsand the runs down flat and try another coat and see how it looks, adjust your fan a little wider and move a little faster with the gun

Re: Wow I screwed up

i HIGHLY doubt that he's using hot rod flatz. if you read what i wrote earlier, single stage dulls out.... loses it's shine. somehow i doubt that would be a problem with hot rod flatz >.>

Re: Wow I screwed up

How far are you holding your gun from your work? are you using a HVLP gun? Single stage has been around along time, we used to spray laquer, now there was a paint you could run.

Sand it back down and try and recoat it, do you have a spare or junk body panel you can practice on? remember keep the gun moving, always go past the edge of the panel before you sweep back. Small runs and such can be wet sanded out, they do happen; follow the paint directions to the letter when thinning it out. I either spray BC/CC or Tri-coats now, you will get there it takes time an the runs are part of the learning curve.

Re: Wow I screwed up

As long as it's from a reputable manufacturer, I would n't necessarily call single stage garbage. Some professionals prefer to use single stage black because they feel it has better color. With the proper UV additives, it would hold up fine. If the OP wetsands the car with 400, paying particular attention to the runs by making sure they're sanded flat, he can shoot it again and be fine. Provided he's applied enough of a film build, he can even sand and buff it.

MY orange iroc was painted with single stage 6 years ago. Still looks new, and has spent about 3 years sitting outsie.

Re: Wow I screwed up

there are some huge advantages to using single stage paint for non-metallic colors. If you spray enough coats on, it can be sanded and buffed just like clear. it also touches up much easier than clear.

these stripes were done with single stage, on a car that was already done with BC/CC. if I had to do it over again I would rather have done the stripes before I cleared over the entire car, but that has nothing to do with the quality of single stage paint, it has to do with the fact that when I removed the pinstripe paint, some of the edges were a little jagged, because of the thickness I had to use when applying the paint

Re: Wow I screwed up

to the OP's question..

yes, sand out your problem spots and go over them again. If the paint is dripping, you are either going too slow, your paint is too thin, or your gun is not set up properly.

When you spray, does your gun spray a pattern that looks like a 10" long cigar? It should

also, turn the cap 90* and spray a horizontal pattern... hold the until the paint starts to drip. Does it drip evenly right to left, or does it drip from the middle first? or the ends?

all of this will help tell you if your gun is set up properly

Re: Wow I screwed up

The biggest problem is usually people try to put on too much product in a single coat, what size tip is in your gun?

I still use single stage on equipment, recovery tanks, metal tables that we have built along with older tool boxes, it holds up great. It is all in what you buy, cheap = cheap
