Ok, So i order a battery tray for my 88 Trans Am GTA from Summit Racing, telling them what it is, and they send one out. Its wrong because my battery is on the driver side and the one the send is a passenger side battery tray. Is my Trans Am real rare because it has the battery on the driver side? Summit tell me they dont stock and have never heard of a battery being on the driver side of an F body car.......
Some one help me?

ALL 3rd gen Firebirds have the battery on the Drivers side.
ALL 3rd gen Camaros have the battery on the Passenger side.

(disclaimer:applies to factory built cars only.....owners can relocate it elsewhere)

And the GTA battery tray is no different than any other Firebird battery tray, so get one for a Firebird & your good to go.

 

My 3.1 Camaro has the battery on the driver's side and I'm certain none of the previous owners had the know-how to switch sides, and my 4cylinder parts camaro also has the battery set to be on the drivers side so maybe it's only a V8 deal.

 

Interesting.....Maybe it is a V8 deal? Except that I wouldn't expect it to be that. That would mean emissions stuff relocation & I couldn't see an assembly line having 2 sets of that sort of stuff to build the cars in a hurry, having to see which engine first plus 2 sets of parts that essentially served the same function, but who knows? Never seen a 4-cyl 3rd gen. I knew they were built, just never have see one.

 

My 88 TA is on the passenger side. The evap canister and cruise control is on the drivers side.

 

LOL ...I drive forklift at the mobis factory ...we assemble the jeep wrangler frame ...if you take the body off a wrangler ....everything from front bumper to back bumper ..is what we put in at mobis ...and I could tell you a lot ..I know its not a GM place ...but wow ...I could see how a car coming down the line ...would get one part or another ...we run short and long ( 2 door or 4 door ) and of them its a gas or diseal ..and some gas and all diseal are exported and then we have what stays in the U.S....so it could be a V8 thing ..

 

All 82-92 305 4bbl , crossfire or TBI firebirds had the battery on the passenger side. All 85-92 TPI cars had it on the drivers side.

 

My 87 TPI has a bat on the passenger side and the canister on the driver side ..

As well as the battery being on the driver side, i also got the wind shield washer pot and cruise control and on the pass side is my air cleaner. God only knows why the battery was on both sides in essentially the same car.....

Both of mine were Van Nuys (sp?) cars, so that might be part of it.
The 4cyl looks just like every other sports coupe :P.
Really I've never seen one either. I only know that it had a 4cyl 'cause I decided to decode the vin out of curiousity (it's an 85) Bought it for the headlight bar and interior, it had no motor or trans, though I might use the 3.73 rear end in the future.

 

it depends on the engine, not just camaro/firebird

my 86 ta has the battery on the passengerside, my 92 has it on the driverside.

any firebird with a TPI or v6 with FI, has the battery on the driverside because the intake tubing goes into the battery location on the passengerside. carb and tbi should have the battery on the passengerside.

 

yep that's what I was just gonna say. my 91 tbi 305 was on the passenger side, and my current 91 formula 350 tpi is on driver side.

 

There isn't an aftermarket battery tray for batteries on the driver's side..... please would someone make one!
