Help - Multi-function Lever messed up!!!

Hi All,

My multi-function (turn signal, cruise, etc...) lever doesn't work to dim or brighten the lights any more. Do i have to pull the steering wheel to get it out or can it be replaced with the wheel on? Anybody have any experience doing this? I was also thinking of just doing the floor dimmer idea posted elsewhere by macgyver. Anyone else have good luck with that? Looks cool to me i dunno. thanks!

There is an adjustment on the column for the dimmer switch, the lever doesn't do anything but put push a rod down to the switch.

This is located on the left side of the column...below the mounting bolts for the column. (its kinda toward the top)

Does everything else on that lever work??

I would adjust the switch. At worse case you have to buy a new one.

No, you don't have to pull the wheel.

My stalk switch broke in my 89RS. If I remember you push the whole stalk in and twist and it pops out of the column.

Thanks for the tips, i found the switch the rod is supposed to be moving on the steering column. But of course the rods not moving so it must be broken by the multi-function gizmo. Everything else off the multi-funct. works fine. So now i just gotta pull the m.f. and see where its broken.

Dan.

Dan - I don't know how far you've gotten into it yet, but it may not be moving because of the switch being messed up and not allowing it to. I'm just tossing this out here... I had kind of the same problem for a LONG time and never fixed it cause (1) I didn't know how and (2) they said it was a bunch of $ (labor) to fix it. Then one day a long time ago before this board went down that time, someone els had the same problem and that's where I basically figured out I could fix the m/f myself. Anyhow... getting to the switch really isn't too easy. You'll need to drop the lower dash cover, of course, but you'll have to drop the steering column, as well - just a couple of nuts. But that switch is like in a hard-to-get place. Hopefully it's just the switch messed up, or even better, loose. All that was wrong with mine is that is was out of adjustment. I popped it loose, adjusted it, and tightened her down - been good to go ever since. Good luck - I hope it's fairly easy for you...

I've got two camaros with bad mfswitches. one is wipers, the other cruise thats malfunctioning. i figured out how to twist an pull out the lever, but i cant get the darn wires to come out so i can unplug them. do i have do drop and skin the column for this. it's been awhile since i messed with this issue but i'd love to fix it. also how much does a new lever cost from gm?

thanks

Hi All,

thanks for the tips, in reply to alex the wires are plugged into a connector somewhere around the base of the steering column. Once unplugged they just pull out through the top but its a good idea to tie a string to them so you can put them back in w/out too much hassle.
