alternative to swapping gague clusters?

Alright, if I want a 145 speedo instead of my 85mph one, is it really neccessary to swap the whole gague cluster? Couldn't I just put an overlay that continues the numbers higher over my speedometer? It is a cable driven speedo, and the needle does continue around, so it seems like it would work. Anything I didn't think of?

no, I don't think swapping clusters is necessary, but at least swapping the spedometer itself would be. The two speedometers are incremented differently, so a 65mph reading on yours will be something completely different if you put an overlay on it. I think the distance from 0 to the top speed is the same so if you were to put an overlay on yours it would read 145mph when you're only going 85...It's much less of a headache to just swap the whole cluster though.

If you do this you are out of your fu-king mind! Do you have any idea what type vibration is going to occur with the wheels spinning at 100 miles per hour? When the car falls off the stands with the wheels spinning that fast, what are you going to do then? Please use your head.

No, don't stop him. The Darwin Awards needs new stories for their list! But seriously. Don't try this at home!! You have two choices: 1) get a new 145 mph speedo, 2) get your speedo converted and re-calibrated to a 145 mph speedo. I don't know which will be the cheaper route. The Clock Doc claims he can re-caibrate them. 1(800)256-5362. Bill is the contact. Good luck, Lon.

Ok guys, seriously....the needle continues to go past 85mph. I know this because I've seen it do it (not on jackstands, however). My idea wasn't to put on an overlay that would put 145mph where 85mph currently is, but to use one (custom made perhaps, but that is another topic) that would simply continue the current numbering sequence with the same scale. I know the whole custom/homemade overlay thing has been sort of a debatable topic lately, but that's not really my point here. Thanks again.

Just swap the speedometer, geez. It's really SOOOO easy you wouldn't believe it.

8 screws on the bezel, two nuts inside the cluster, four screws to remove the plastic cover above your knees, loosen two nuts to lower the steering column, pull out the cluster, push 1 metal tab to release the speedo cable after a squeeze play on your arm, and bam it's out. Pull the VSS plug, take out two screws from the speedo and it falls out into your lap.

I could do it in 15 minutes.

That would be like paying some guy to do your disc brakes.

Bah. You don't even need to lower the steering column if you've got a tilt wheel. I can have my gauges out and reinstalled in 10 minutes. Like he said, it's cake.

Yeah, I actually would rather swap the cluster. It's just that my car does not have a computer anymore, so I don't know what it would take to get all of the gagues in the new cluster working again. The other thing is that the 145mph cluster has a tach in it already, right? That would kind of make the tach that I have added under the center a/c vents redundant. Ideally I would use the entire 145mph cluster though. Maybe I could butcher it and put my tach in it, or put something else where the tach goes or something. Just an idea.

I have a pos 85mph cluster laying around and I took it apart and moved the needle around as far as it would go. If you went on the same scale, the needle would be buried at about 92 or 93mph. There are internal stops on it and it would never reach your custom 145mph mark. It would be a total waste of money and time. swap out the cluster and hope that you find someone who wont rip you off like some people in the classifieds who want 100+ bux for them.

I simply removed the needle and repositioned it almost straight down, then repainted the numbers as to where what used to be 10 mph is now 20, and 85 is 95, and then added some extra lines and removed the stop, and trip odometer reset pin, and now I have a 110 mph speedo. If I'm ever going any faster than that, the cop will tell me. Atleast that's what I told myself when I wanted a 140 mph speedo.

Hey johns84bird,

I'm sure I've gotten the needle on mine to swing around past 92 or 93mph. I don't know how gauges differed from year to year in design and all, but could there be a difference in the speedometers. Or maybe the ones that came with different engines or something. My gauge setup is from a 1984 Camaro with a 2.8L V6 and a T-5. If I remember right, i've had it go to around where 120 would be using the same numbering scale. It is the kind of setup with the double ended needle that has mph on one side and kmh on the other, if that helps at all. Anyways, I might have to check and make sure where it will go to.

stingerss,

i like the idea of repositioning the needle to get more of a range before the stops
