Pulling out guage cluster = HUGE PITA!!!! HELP!

Ok, I've read about people doing a cluster swap and everyone talks about how easy it is. I got everything out, except I can't get the speedo cable disconnected from the back of the speedo! I tried to reach up from underneath but I can only touch the cable with one finger because it's cluttered with all kinds of crap. Should I take the dash pad off and go at it through the top? The only piece of the dash I can open up from the bottom is a huge piece and I'll pretty much have to rip the entire dash apart. Is there an easy way to do this?!?!

Please help me out. I really want to get this 85mph cluster out and swap in my 145mph cluster with white faced guages so I'll be ready to go when my car's home this summer.

Keep reaching up from the bottom. There isn't that much stuff in the way. Contort yourself so your head is mashed up against your gas pedal and you'll be able to reach it.

did you unbolt the 2 bolts that hold the steering column up, if not there is 2 big bolts under the column that you can take out and pull the column down. It makes it a lot easier to get to the back of the cluster and even makes it easier to pull the cluster out.

Hope that helps

I usually use a long screwdriver to apply pressure to the clip so it will release.

Like Omar says. Piece of cake.

When I pulled the 145 cluster out of one I went from the top, its almost as akward as going from the bottom though... its easier when you have no dash pad and don't have a speaker in your way though... but either way you've got to move things out of your way a bit ... be it steering column or dashpad/speaker ... its just up to you and your preference

Thanks guys. I didn't move the steering column out of the way. With it in place, it seem's almost impossible to get it out. First I'll try the screwdriver technique. If that doesn't work, I'll drop the steering column. I'll off to try it now, wish me luck!

If you drop the steering column a quarter inch or so, you'll have more room to manoeuvre the cluster out of the dash. I stuck some masking tape of the column to avoid scratches.

Just loosen the two nuts holding up the column, then spin them down to the end of the stud (don't have to remove them), and that should give you enough clearance.

All you have to do is loosen the speedo cable from the cruise regulator and push some of it into the dash area... you can get the cluster out far enough to see the clip.

I had the same problem when i did mine. I was able to get a little more slack by gently pushing through any slack in the cable in the engine compartment

Thanks guys, I got it! Sorry for the late post, I got it right away really long screwdriver and a flashlight. I used the same technique to pop it back in. I didn't have to drop the steering column or anything.

IT LOOKS AWESOME! I totally recommend the white overlay's and Xenon bulbs to everyone. They look so much better in person than in pictures.
