B & M Megashifter installation; hassle?
B & M Megashifter installation; hassle?
I was looking at the B & M Megashifter made for the 700-R4 tranny and it looks cool. Question for anyone who's installed one: Do I have to rip out the console and do major modifications to my 92 Camaro? Anyone have pictures? that would help. Thanks!
Keeping the answer technicle:
You do have to cut out the stock center-console plate, but it comes with a template and is not hard to do with a cutoff wheel. I wouldn't recommend a reciprocating saw of any sort, because by now the plastic in our cars is pretty brittle and those are pretty likely to crack and/or chip the plastic.
You also have to drill two holes for the forward mounting bolts, and splice the wiring harness (although I modified some spade connectors so I could use the stock wiring connector).
Adjusting the cable can be time consuming, anc requires several trips in and under the car.
Also, adjusting the switches takes some care.
Now, the technical stuff aside: the shifter looks pretty good, and makes driving an automatic a lot more fun. It does have it's drawbacks and some people have been pretty disappointed with them, but just as many people love them. I just look at it realistically: for the price, it's better/cooler than the stock one.

I got about half way though installing mine and thought "WHAT HAVE I DONE TO MY BABY!!" Once I got over that and put it all together it was well worth it. You will have doubts all the way though if you are like me but the finished product is sweet!
Don't worry about adjusting the cable. I got it on the first try by following the direction. It is not hard to install; just time consuming and tough to get your fingers in where the bolts go. I love mine!

Dont get it if you have a pontiac... it's not a direct bolt in im speaking from experience here.. i used a cutoff wheel and modified my console plate... but it was a MAJOR PITA ESPECIALLY if you have power mirrors, the plate wont sit far enough back and your boot will be bent perminantly whicch isnt terribly bad but o well i'm going to get a custom plate fabricated with tranny temp and so on at a later point in time.. it looks ok now just not the Greatest

I have a 91 firbird and it was a direct bolt in and looks very clean. Follow the instructions and take your time. It took me about 4 hours from start to finish. Be sure to take your time adjusting the cable correctly or you will be getting another one within a month or so like i did and believe me to get the car in and out of gear with a busted cable is a nightmare. I used a dremal with a cutting wheel to mod the consol - again take your time on it, its very easy to do and looks decent. The plate doesn't hit the window switches. Go for it - it looks nice
