88 IROC Paint Thread

I started this project last year (March 2012) and here it is already, a year later. During this process I have been taking photos along the way. Here are a few to get this started.

I started by sanding the whole car but then decided to strip the whole thing.

Today I have the car completely stripped and sealed. Just waiting for a little time to get it painted.

Enjoy! Looking for advice on a color. Opinions welcome.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

I bought a donor 92 RS donor car about 7 years ago so this has been in the works for quite some time. Hence the purple doors and fenders.

About 12 years ago I swapped the tired 305 with a crate 350 from GM. So this has been a project car for some time. I really enjoy this camaro.

So you can see I stripped everything, including the jambs. I think I am OCD with the body work but thats just me.

Enjoy!

Shave the antenna .They look so much cleaner without it.
I have a antenna mounted above the rear view mirror out of site but Ive gotten to the point that I CANT stand all of the advertisements any more. I have a extensive CD collection.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

I have been seriously thinking about shaving the antenna. The one that I have doesnt telescope like it should, yet another reason to eliminate it. I've got some 20 Gauge along with my MIG. Once a little more time passes and the more that I think about it I am probably going to relocate it.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

Got some photos of the reconstruction of the driver's side gfx. The part, before the repair, was broken into two pieces and missing quite a bit of glass. Not only did I fuse them back together but I had to mold in the recess for the mounting screw. Looking back, I should have spent the money and just got either a new or used, but I did have fun making the repair. It turned out so well that only I will know the amount of time it took to make it look like new.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

Here is the finished product along with a shot of the hood. I fitted a 3" cowl glass hood. Only had to trim the front edge to clear the nose and to align the top with both fenders. Turned out really nice.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

I removed the rear hatch from the car and the glass. I found a bit of rust but cut it all out and welded in some patches. Grinded it all down, layed down some bondo and feathered it out. Turned out pretty nice.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

Well, I kept thinking about shaving the antenna and finally decided to do it. I already like the look of eliminating it. If you are debating whether or not to do it I would highly recommend it. Very easy to do with nickel size sheet of 22gauge and a welder, grinder and bondo. Now, if anyone else out there has done this and knows of a good product/solution of relocating it I am all ears. Thanks. More to come. Ready to paint now.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

On my first third gen ...I just glasses over the hole in mine from underneath then skim coated. Now just use an MP3 player so might eliminated antenna altogether. Have a police scanner for traffic and weather info.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

I have been looking at the new 2013 Blue Ray Metallic WA122V. What do you all think? I have a buddy that is going to paint it who used to paint for a living but I am wandering if anyone out there has experience painting a metallic and what advice they might have. Thanks for the nice website MintWS6FORMULA. Now I dont have to go digging around for paint codes on car lots and bugging the salesman. Thanks again.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

Got the hood blocked this weekend. Use some of the Polyester glazing puddy by Evercoat. This stuff works and sands great.

I used Autoloc hidden antenna. Works good, but not the same as factory (not as good of range). I have an Mp3 7" touch screen deck, so the radio doesn't really matter much to me though.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

Well this weekend I finished blocking the lower half of my drivers door. Found a few bumps in it doing my final inspection before paint. Also started to apply some seam sealer in areas that I grinded it out. Everything turned out really nice. Looking to paint next month when it is a little cooler.

Just a little update. Dropped off the car today and finally got all the rattle can primer off and purchased PPG OMNI paint to finish her off. Paint is scheduled for next weekend.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

So what color are you painting it ?
Walking car lots and car shows is really the way to find a color. Im not saying they will have what your looking for but you never know.

Re: 88 IROC Paint Thread

Some more updated photos. Started to put the gfx back on the car and starting to install the motor for the LH window. I noticed that the triangle seal piece that installs on the front of the door from my donor 92rs doesnt have the replaceable little tracks. Is this correct? If so I like not having them. I am going to use the 92 triangles. Looks like it was a design change for 92?
