New Gauges in a 91 RS

Ok, I was wondering if I could put the gauge cluster from like an 87 IROC-Z like my dad's and make it work in my car. I hate the stock gauges, and I would do almost anything to get somthing better.

Yeah, the 87's are circles, the 91's are semi circles.

I've gotta agree with Mac. Those circle guages look like crap. I like the guages in my 91, although I wouldn't mind getting white face guages. If you really hate just the colors and not the guages as a whole, look for some white face overlays or go to www.blackcatcustom.com They have neat (but expensive) custom guage inserts.

So I suck because I like the guages in my car? If you think they look so queer, change them out and put some new ones in.

I like the 91/92 gauges, except the light goes right through so my home made white faced gauges look like crap at night. I gotta figure out how to fix that..

I had the same problem when I put my white face guages in.. What i ended up doing was wiring 2 9" Mini blacklights under the dashpad (its almost completely hidden, i've got a strip of electrical tape covering the beam so i'm not blinded..) They light up the gauges GREAT. They glow a neon blue/purple color.. I've gotten a TON of compliments on these..

Ok, I want the circle gauges because I want to get a big white tach and speedo, and the half circle things, well, I just don't like them. I guess they are ok, but there are no aftermarket half circle gauges. The blacklight idea seems cool. thanks for the advice. *** knows I need all the help I can get when it comes to interior work.

half moon guages are queer; hmmm.... ok

what if i told you having a 5.7 TB was queer. shouldn't it be a 5.0 or did you do the swap; and if so why didn't you do a TP instead of a TB or were you just confused?

If you could do a swap like that then guages should be no problem.

no seriously, the hardest part of the whole swap was finding the ECM so I could get codes to get a custom chip burned. The interior is greek to me. I learned on a 72 cutlass, the rs is my first EFI car, and the 305 sucked. Does anyone know what cfm the tb unit flows at? But man, I just hope the thing starts.

I was not aware that guages had a sexual preference

I'm pretty sure he didn't ask for anyone's opinion about the swap. He just wanted to know if it was possible. I'm sure it is, but will require a complete dash replacement and a lot of rewiring. You will have to adapt a security light and an air bag light to the older cluster. Get yourself a service manual for a 91 and an 87. You can look at the wiring diagrams and figure out what needs to be done. Good luck.

The stock TB is 500cfm. Holley makes a 670cfm and Edelbrock makes a much better flowing manifold. Chip calibration will depend on your engine combo.

personally, i LOVE my gueages compared to the older circle style. not sure how you can get them replaced though. i heard that they are different hookups or whatever.

The gauges for the 82-90 Camaro have cable driven speedometers and late 90,91 and 92 are electrical. So you would have to buy a speedometer cable and do modifications through the dash.
If you kept the stock 82-90 cluster,
and bought an aftermarket electronic speedometer, to put in your Camaro you won't have to worry about a cable
(just alot of rewiring on your 91).

My two cents.

You'll need the entire dash from the 87', so the speedo cable should not be a problem. You'll have to mix the two wiring harnesses using the Service manuals as a guide. It's will no doubt be a lot of work and you should ask yourself if it's worth it before you start any work. Do as much research beforehand and make a wiring diagram to follow.
