Try lighter fluid. Its fairly safe and will disolve adhesives.

I had a silimar problem and this is what I did - I pulled the dash from the car to make life easier, then got some "googone" and got off as much as I could, then picked at the grain with a sewing needle for at least an hour. It finally all came off but was a major hassle. Good luck. I hope yours is easier.

The lighter fluid will evaporate thoroughly enough not to leave a smell. If you're worried about spotting, test a small out of the way bit of dash first.

Rubbing alcohol is typically 20-30% water, so won't be strong enough to (or might not be) get the goop off completely.

Rubbing alcohol has lotions and lubricants as well as a large amount of water. In past experiances I've seen it turn plastic white. Not exactly the reaction you want to encounter in the middle of a dashpad.

Try this stuff called Ultra Citrus. Its sold in the automotive dept. at WalleyWorld as an air freshener. The citric acid in the stuff will take away the goo really fast and easy without damaging the dash. And in the end you will have a nice orange smell in your car.
