B & M Mega Shifter

For those those of you that have the B & M mega shifter, how do you like it? is it worth the price? is it an improvement over the stock shifter? I heard that it is hard to get out of "Park", is this true? do you guys recommend it?

I like mine! It is a definate improvement over the stock shifter, actually any aftermarket unit is better. You don't have to worry about dropping it in neutral while racing! I'd recommend it.

Now on the part about it being hard to get out of Park, that's BS......kinda. If you install one, it will be hard to get out of Park. After about a week, it will loosen up and you'll have no problems getting it in and out of gear, but like I said that's only for the first week. Everything has to "break in" so to say.

Oh yeah, if you do put one in your car, here is a recommendation from somebody who lives where the sun shines 300 days a year. Keep the handle out of the sun, unless you want B&M tatoo'd on your palm.

Hope that helps!

The little clip on the front of mine for the pull up T broke So it sucks right now.

If I was stayin with a AUTO i WOULD NOT get a megashifter again. I dont like it. Id get a Quarter Stick or something.

but since Im going T56 Im doing a pro 5.0

Are they hard to install? It seems lots of people have them on here, and I really like the look it adds to the inside of the car, not to mention I don't like the stock one. I get tons of sun in my car though... I guess I could put a leather T-handle or something on it that won't get as hot. Or leave a hat over it or something.

I have over 16,000 trouble free miles on mine. It still works great and I love it.

put mine in a few weeks ago and am loving it...
mine took a bit longer cuz i put some bigger bolts in to help support it more (had a fun time 'hugging' the tranny to get the damn things on..)... but i'd say its definitely worth it - much better than the stock POS.

Also wanna make sure you have a pair of gloves during the winter/cold cuz that thing will be freezing (dont grab it w/ a wet hand or else you'll be stuck )

92 formula

Will it work in my car? I really like it. Is it just a take out and put in deal or is there some custom work that has to be done?

THanks, Jesse

I like it, and it's an improvement over stock, but I believe I will go with something else when/if there's a next time. It really does have some quality of design issues.

Love mine. Took 3 hrs to install and used the stock cable and didn't have to get under the car. Use locktite so the handle won't strip, never armorol the boot. For the first week it is a little rough getting out of park but after that it's fine. My Mom says she hates it, guess it makes others not to want to drive my car, added benefit. My GF doesn't mind it though .

The way I solved the cold shift **** problem was to cut up an old sock. then just slide it down over the shifter.

Or you could all stop being sissies and deal with the cold , just jokin. Those handles to get freezing, but I find it better to be cold than hot as he!!.

I just got B&Ms black plastic ****. It matches the car better, and doesn't get hot or cold. Not to mention a slight weight savings.

Mark A Shields,
How did you get that tach to stay in the corner like that. I have a 91 Z28 and that corener is very small. I was just going to mount it under the ac vents in the middle. How did you get it there?

Does the B&M require any cutting of the console? My other
question is Does the B&M shifter have its own display or
does it use the stock shift indicator display?

thanks!

Cutting the console would depend on if you're talking firebird or camaro. They are supposedly "made" for camaros in that destorying the console plate is not necessary. This goes for Camaroes that have the torx screws holding various rectangular plates to the console. I've never owned a camaro, so I cant tell you which years positively. On these camaroes, you can just pull the stock shifter plate and replace it with B&M's plate and torx screws. ...Looks more factory than with firebirds which you will have to use a dremel tool or something to cut the shifter hole larger, drill pilot holes, and then attach it with non-factory-appearing torx screws. It does not look awful IMHO on firebirds, however. The megashifter does have its own display. It's not quite as nice as your factory one. The light is not very good, and the indicator cable can bind or break more easily. Hope that answered your questions...

The problem of the shifter being hard to get out of park has come up before and I had the same thing. I changed the cbale to one of the heavy duty cables, I think the 3ft one, and ran it straight to the tranny. Forget the wrap around loop they show. With the HD cable running straight it's still a little tight but so much better.

On the newer Megashifters for the Camaro you don't have to cut the gear indicator plate? On mine you had to cut out the middle with a provided paper template of the gear indicator panel leaving just a trim ring type piece left for the B&M indicator/boot panel to sit on top of.

I never minded the cold much. It was the sorching heat after sitting in the sun for a few hours. The first time I grabbed the handle on a hot day I thought I branded my hand "B&M"

i love my B&M shifter cant race very well with the stock shifter cuz you have to worry bout going into reverse and thats not very cool on the tranny and the rachet shift make it quick and easy to shift from gears when going through the low gears
only problem i have is that when i went to paint my console this last weekend and i thought i rememberd how the gear unit on the indicator went on but i slept since i took it off and now i can figure out how it works but thats my own stupidity so if you have a pic of the plate w/the indicator on it that would be useful

Megashifter console modification

The instructions tell u to cut the stock plate, what I did is get some PVC plate, (or plexiglass) and cut it out of that, even the part with the ashtray, but i left that part flat. It looks nice after painting and gives it a racier look, i will send pics if you want them. (I just thought the way they wanted you to do it was just kind of ghetto)

Let's say down the road I am looking at getting a
4th gen console.. Would the Megashifter still
work?? If not is there 4th gen shifters of some
kind that would work??

My last question is does the B&M use the same
light as the original console??

Thanks!

Would love to see more pics
