Rear hatch strut bolt

Because I’m a ham-fisted idiot, I cross threaded the torx head shoulder bolt at the bottom of the strut where it bolts to the body and snapped it. I’ve tried using easy-outs but it won’t shift so I’m going to have to drill it and helicoil it but I’ve no idea what thread the bolt is. Anybody know?

Take out the bolt from the other side and measure it?

I doubt the hardware store will have shoulder bolts but you can use their thread gauge.

It'll be a metric thread. Probably an M8 or M10.

Thanks, I think it's an M8. I'm based in the UK and wasn't sure whether it would be metric or imperial. I thought you guys hated metric

I snapped the thin bit. Just kept swinging on it even though it was getting hard to turn (because it had jammed up due to crossthreading it). As I said, I'm an idiot.

Re: Rear hatch strut bolt

I've managed to find someone selling shoulder bolts on eBay that are the right dimensions, but with an M10 thread instead of M8, so I'll drill it out and fit an M10 helicoil and pretend it never happened.

Re: Rear hatch strut bolt

Check a good hardware store for metal "Bushings". ("Bushes" in your part of the world) You may be able to use one to shoulder a regular bolt. Helicoil to OE size.

Re: Rear hatch strut bolt

The only "off the shelf" bushings I can find that are 25mm diameter are drilled for M10 bolts. I don't think drilling out to an M10 will be a problem, there's plenty of metal there to go at.
