My resto mod build has finally got the door rebuild stage and the the glass on the door I am working on has a chip in it.
I want to replace the glass and want some insight into my options.
Junkyard vs new from OER.
Price is not a concern as they are in the same ballpark.
Jegs has the glass for $170. Pretty cheap if the quality is OK. Nice knowing it is new and the tint of the glass will match from left to right.
I also need a new windshield and OER sells those too. So sticking with them seems like an OK plan.
Wondering if anyone here has tried OER door glass and thoughts on the quality.
Thanks!

they mos tlikley dont have oer, and use other brands. id call my insurance and use my glass coverage and have all 4 windows replaced for 'free' and le the glass shop do all the work. Oh wait, thats actually what i did about 6 years ago on my last repaint. It was much easier letting them do the work.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
Nice little "hack" to get new glass. Not an option for me on this build, but go to know for the future.
My build is still on a rotisserie with no motor or trans, I am just slowly going thru the build piece by piece and want to get new glass into these doors.
I am also shaving the locks, and handles. Then plan to paint the inside and prime the outside to get ready for color/clear down the road.
Hawks and others sell junkyard glass, which I am sure is fine. Just was wondering if anyone had bought the OER stuff and had any comments on it.
I may just buy it and post a review thread so others know...
The OP from the OER Door Glass thread also has replies in the Door Glass Interchange thread. Reply #29 in the interchange thread throws everything for a loop again.
I don't know where your door glass is chipped but there are stops in the door that prevent the door glass from rolling down too far. If these are missing or broke the glass will roll down too far. On the way back up it will hit against something in the door and chip the glass on the inside edge.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
i bought new glass from Jegs for my build. the part numbers were 555-46265 for the driver side and 555-46268 for the passenger side. it took forever to actually get them - like 6 months.
these ones have the green tint like factory. they came direct shipped and the boxes didn't say OER so i think they were from a different manufacturer.
there are some threads on here saying there's differences in the glass between model years but my car is a 1984 Trans Am and these fit perfect.
i had originally planned to install some used spare door glass i have but they all had minor defects: ie. small nicks on the edges or fine scratches from worn out fuzzy window guides.
doing a ground up build like you are, you'll want to just buy new glass so everything is perfect. the only thing i couldn't get new was the rear hatch. mine has some rub marks on the hatch where i assume a previous owner had louvers but i couldn't find one in better condition.

Thank you so much battmann. I hadn't done an extensive search on Jegs, summit, etc... But knowing you got some good pieces is enough for me to give it a go. I would have preffered them to not have the factory greenish tint, but I guess its OK. I plan to put some minor tint on there in the end anyways. Probably won't see the green much.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
Jegs sells untinted, clear versions too if that’s what you prefer. I originally wanted those but was worried it might look odd with the rear hatch having the factory tint.

Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
Don't hold my feet to the fire on this because it's the best as I can recall.
I think it was all untinted windows, tinted front windshield with all other windows untinted, and all windows tinted. Factory AC cars should have had all tinted windows. I think around 1990 all cars got all windows tinted.
It's easy to check because the label on the glass will say if it is tinted or not. Different glass manufactures may have called tinted windows by their marketing name for tinted windows.

I can't seem to find the glass that is not tinted green. I searched "camaro 1992 window glass"
I also tried 1982 and 1989, but get the same results.
Anyone know part numbers of search terms? All i can find is the green stuff.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
Factory Glass hardware changed sometime around 89-90. I'm guessing that any new glass will have no hardware included and you'll have to re-use all your existing stuff again. I converted all the glass and hardware to the later style when I rebuilt my 88.
I've got a bunch of used door glass,...... but like @battmann said; they all have minor defects. It's one thing to HAVE to replace a busted window in a DD, but another thing when your car is on a rotisserie !
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
Thanks for the added info John.
I have the hardware from current glass that I will be reusing.
Apart from a small chip the glass I have is almost perfect, but like you said, this build needs nice stuff with the amount of time and effort going into it.
Maybe I will call Jegs and see if they can find the non green glass in their system.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
these were the part numbers for clear glass when I looked into buying them before ultimately settling on the green tint versions.
passenger side: 555-46264
driver side: 555-46267
it looks like these parts aren’t coming up now though when I search for them on the Jegs site.

Do you recall what is different about the hardware?
I bought a '92 a while back that had been off the road for 25-ish years. The driver window was way out of adjustment and rain water would run right in. I attempted to adjust the glass, but it just wasn't possible. I had to remove the forward up-travel stop completely so the glass could roll up high enough. It must have door glass from an older car then?
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
The 82-83 cars used a specific window "triangle" compared to other cars,... IIRC even the door itself had a specific stud or design to accommodate that part.
Here's a couple pics showing the 82-88 vs 89(?) + hardware: RED circled stuff is 82-88 and BLUE circled stuff I got from a 92. ( Might have been later than 89,.. not SURE about the year change ) I think the GREEN circled "thing" was on the 88 glass.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
Interested in what grease used as well. And I bought some OER Door Window Stop Bumpers for the windows, and for the life of my I cannot figure out where they go. Maybe mine is rotted out thus is the mystery. I can't even see this part in the FSM that I have.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
I've used to use White Lithium a lot, but it kind of fell out of favor for me. For a couple restorations I used regular all purpose grease on the window tracks and that worked better IMO. For the last few years I've begun to use Brake Lube for a LOT of stuff and I'd bet that it would work great for the window tracks !
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
What about Moly lube?
I bought some many years ago for who knows what, and a tiny dab of it seems to stay slick forever.
I am interested in what the factory uses for stuff like this since the rollers are some kind of plastic I would think there may be material compatibility considerations to take into account.

Yep, the Syl-Glyde brake lube has become my "multi-purpose" lube over the last 10 years or so.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
I haven’t personally used OER door glass, but I’ve heard mixed things. Some say the tint/color match is really good, and since it's new, you avoid the risk of hidden cracks or stress fractures that used yard glass. On the flip side, junkyard glass is “battle tested” and cheaper if resale value isn’t a concern.
One point of comparison. I looked into windshield replacement too, and Safelite Autoglass reviews are pretty positive. They do solid installs and use OEM or high-quality aftermarket glass, which makes me lean toward new over used for critical parts.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
It has been 8 years since I changed my glass but mine is a 92 and I had to modify the stops to get the glass to fit and I still have a little trouble with alignment for a good seal around the windows. Also, I believe the green tint is there to reduce the UV entering the car. Helps prevent sunburn on your left arm.... My photo shade prescription glasses don't darken as much when I am in the car versus outside. That is due to reduced UV in the car because of the glass tint.
Re: Need new door glass. Anyone tried OER door glass?
Nice to know about the green UV tint.
Since my car is a show car and I plan to use some ceramic tint after the fact makes the OEM tint less of a need but looks like getting "plain' glass isn't an option right now.
Probably won't show much thru the ceramic tint anyways.
At this point I am more concerned about the shape and mounting holes and it sounds like those two aspects are not an issue.

I'd say that 99% of the time, people with "green" tinted glass don't even realize that they have tinted glass. Factory "green" tinted windows get a layer of aftermarket tint all the time and it looks fine. New cars to this day usually have some form of shaded tint to the glass.
