I need some help guys...brake gurus toss in your 2 cents...

Alright, here is my dilemma. I have an 88 camaro 500HP 383, blah blah blah. I want to run a decent disc brake setup at all four corners. Now, I must say that I am partial to Baer, and would like to stick with using their stuff. That won't be an issue for the front, as I will end up using their Track(or track plus possibly) front brake setup. That is a 13.0"x 1.10" thick rotor up front, 2 piston caliper. The rear is where I am running into the issue. I was originally going to use a Currie 9 inch but decided on going with a Strange 12 bolt to keep it in the GM family and cut down on cost. The rear will be built to 4th gen specs so they are 2 inches wider on each side. I'm doing this so that I can run my 17x11 ZR1 wheels without using wheel adapters. Now the issue. I looked at various websites that sell F body brakes, as well as looking at Baer's website, and they have no mention of ANY rear brake kits that fit the 93-02 model. As far as I know, Baer only offers rotors with the understanding that you will use the factory caliper. Well that won't do!!! So what I am basically asking is.....

1. Does anyone know for sure that Baer can custom make/or will offer a rear brake kit for the 4th gens?

2. And if they can't, what other brake companies out offer a rear disc brake kit for the 4th gens? And do they offer the same style of kit for the front for a 3rd gen?

I'm finding it to be kinda tough seeing as how I am splitting the brakes up between 2 different model years. The only other option that I have would be to get the 9 inch Ford rear from Currie. I know that Baer makes a track system in the rear for vehicles that use the Torino style bearing. All I would need is to make sure they built it to 4th gen specs and get the lug pattern correct. But in the end I would have spent about another $400-500. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Paul,
all thru this, how do you know you are getting the
correct front-to-back pressure ratio?

my feeling is that the two-bit rebranding operations,
will sell you anything that bolts up.

Well, I currently have a 4th gen rear with discs in the car right now, but it came out of a V6 car(hence the no posi thing). The brakes haven't locked up yet, but I really haven't been mashing on them so the possibility of the rears locking up is always there. If I do run into an issue, I can just plumb in an adjustable proportioning valve and set the rear bias to whatever i want.

Baer's rear kit will bolt onto that rear given that it has GM flanges but it won't be any different than the rear discs on a '89-97 car with the exception that the rotor is a full 12" in diameter. That's all they offer for rears, sorry.

If you look into it, Dean (don't know current TGO screenname) used a 4th gen Wilwood rear disc kit with the internal drum parking brake design and it works for pretty much any GM flanged rearend and if you had to you could upgrade to Wilwoods up front to match.

Well, that is all that I wanted in the rear anyway. The rear touring system that I was looking at from Baer in the rear was for a 12x.80 inch thick rotor. Now, I know that this rear touring kit will fit on the 89-92 cause it says so on the thunderracing.com website. But will that same kit bolt on to the 4th gen rear end?

This is what I plan on running in the front...

52-1301044 Baer Claw Systems, Front 84-92 F-body. (Track) PBR 2 Piston, 13" x 1.10" Rotors, All Necessary Hardware. $1231.99

Available Options:
Rotor Finish: Slot, Crossdrill, and Zinc wash add $120

And then for the rear I was looking at these....

52-1302026 Baer Claw Systems, Rear 89-92 F-body, OEM 10 bolt with disk. (Touring) PBR Single Caliper, 12.00" x .81" Rotors, All Necessary Hardware. $1215.00

Available Options:
Rotor Finish: Slot, Crossdrill, & Zinc Wash - Add $120.00

It should bolt on just fine, yes, as long as your rearend has the same GM flanges.

I can build you those same kits for hundreds less than that with the same options, and I even have a set of new Baer logo front calipers if you'd like those. Right now you're looking at $2687 before shipping and the spindle core charge, I'll come in somewhere around $800 less including the zinc wash and drilled rotors. PM me if you'd like a quote, you'll be very pleased.

ebmiller88: Thank you very much for the offer, I will greatly consider it when I get enough money to start buying the brake stuff. I don't think that it will be any time soon, honestly, but whenthe time comes I will definitely be in contact. Once again...

In the mean time... you can ditch the proportioning valve, run the fronts straight off the master, and put in an adjustable valve for the rears.

I just did a whole lot of swapping into my 87 TA. Part of it was a 4th gen spec strange 12bolt with discs of course. I also used the front LS1 brakes (dual piston). I ran the fronts off the master through a line lock, and the rears through a willwood prop valve.

Let me tell you something. This car hauls down FAST. Its almost painful if you really reel it in hard. Ive only locked the rears up once...and it was during a panic stop. But Ive since adjusted the valve. When I mash on them now...trying not to lock them...I hear squawking from all 4 corners almost like abs and it will seriously make it feel like the seatbelt is about to cut you in half.

Now...I went from crappy 3rd gen dics/drums....to this set up. Vast improvemtn. I also used the 4th gen master cylinder and booster. The booster isnt important, I just used it because I used 4th gen pedals too.

Just something you can do before you get your package from Ed. Who I recommend when you decide to do this by the way....

Good luck!

Justin
