4th gen rear swap

I`m about to buy a 4th gen rear out of a 01 z28 with 23,000 miles.I have been searching and read the tech articles a couple of times but now I`m a little more confused than when I started.I want to make sure I have all the stuff I need to complete the swap in 1 day.Ive read that if the car has traction controll or abs ther may be some issues. This car does have both.Read somewhere I could plug the abs with a bad abs sensor to not have any issues. Is this correct?
Master cylinder and proportioning valve.Should I use the LS1 mastercylinder? Some people didnt use the wildwood proportioning valve and had no issues.I would like to do this right. Is there another proportining valve I could use?Maybe one that I wont have to do all the flaring that the wildwood one needs?
4th gen brake lines.I`ve read that some peoples brake lines where too short.what exactly do I need for this? How much brake line do I need?
This guy is swapping to a ford 9".Is he going to need new brake lines? What about the ebrake cable? In the tech article it sounded like the guy just hooked everything up,but the more searching I do the more questions I have. This is sounding less and less like a direct bolt in the more I read.

Re: 4th gen rear swap

You probably need to expand search terms. All this info is easily found.

You can just unplug the abs. Leave the sensors in, or do what I did and go to a hardware store and get two 7/8" plastic push in plugs to cover the holes where the sensors go. They fit perfectly. Cost was $.75 each.

For a prop valve contact Ed miller. He had some new disk/disk valves in stock. No cutting, no flaring, direct bolt in.

Masrer cylinder: You can use your stock master, or swap in a LT1 or an LS1. I did the LT1 and had to make just one line up. Was easy. I read that the LS1 is a direct bolt in, lines fit exactly. I can't confirm that though.

brake cables: You will need to read both these threads https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/brak...-question.html

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/brak...er-ebrake.html

brake lines: This is how I did it. You will have to get a tubing nut to fit the 3rd gen brake hose, The 4th gen one is too big. I just cut one off an old brake line I had laying around, or go cut one off a 3rd gen in a bone yard.

Re: 4th gen rear swap

ABS/traction control rear end is the 4 channel rear they call it. Has no t-block so you have to convert it back to a 3-channel rear which has the T-block lines like the above pics so you can bolt it to your thirdgen hardlines.

The above links mention just about everything else

Re: 4th gen rear swap

What really sucks is I just found out the guy is keeping his breaks to put on the 9 bolt.Man that pisses me off.But a 23,000 mile 3.42 posi doesnt come along everyday so I`m still gonna get it.These things are not easy to find around here. Thanks for the help guys.

the big 12" brakes is what makes the swap worth while, expecially if you have upgraded fronts

Re: 4th gen rear swap

My posi is shot and the gears are howling si its just a matter of time before it goes.Do you still think its not worth it.How much am I gonna shell out for the brakes?I`m now reading something that says I may have ti modify my UMI LCARB.The e brake isnt the big deal.I will have time to figure that out as The only time I use it is when the car is on ramps or parking on very steep inclines.Guess I just gotta find some brakes and fab the brake lines, then figureout exactly what the deal is with the LCARB.

Re: 4th gen rear swap

ok.After doing some research on the cost of the rear disc 12" brakes I think I may have to pass on this rear.If I had 28 spline axles I might still get it but now I`m kinda pissed.Sorry to waste yalls time but thanks for the help.If I`d known he was gonna keep the brakes I never would have gotten this started.

It looks like I`d have to spend close to $400 bucks or more for the brakes.Anyone seen anything cheaper?

Re: 4th gen rear swap

Well keep looking. I got an LS1 4th gen rear off of Craig's list for $275 complete with brakes. Looked for over and year and hit it lucky. It was listed under "camero rear axle". I've learned to check for mispellings when searching for things I want both on craig's list and ebay.

All rear brakes were the same on all 98+ cars (fbodies), find a v6 in the yard and there you go.

Re: 4th gen rear swap

Where abouts?Didnt find any on ebay or craigslist.summit and jegs only sell drum to disc kits as far as I could tell. The junktards around here are crazy priced. They seem to want top dollor for everything. You can just about go to auto zone or advanced and get stuff at a slightly higher price with a warrenty.I need a door for my truck cheapest I could find was 225.For a 1989 pickup driver door.Thats crazy to me atleast. The u-pull-it yard here sucks. The cars are picked clean and I havnt seen a 4th gen ls1 in it ever.I`m open to suggestions but bone yards here are freakin stupid. To buy from auto parts store with no core looks like its going to put it near 400 bucks.I guess if i look around long enough I may find some.?

Did the v6 come with 12" disc?Guess I`ll look around

Re: 4th gen rear swap

Yes, that is what i meant by all 98+ cars, v6 or v8 all came with the same 12" PBR rear brakes, the same front brakes too actually. The brake system was identical on all 98+ cars reguardless of engine size. Also, the second you tell them you are looking for LS1 parts or V8 parts cars, that adds at least $100 to the price tag to begin with. My suggestion is to join a website such as LS1tech.com as i have seen many rear brake systems for $90-$100 loaded with brake pads and everything. As far as the ebrake, there are pages on here that describe what you can do to use the original LS1 ebrake cables. I have also seen others use the ebrake cable bracket from underneath a 98+ 4th gen. The options are vast. And i have done this to my car, using some fourth gen parts to make my third gen parts work flawlessly together. Also installed a 4th gen booster with master cylinder as well. Any questions or pictures needed for the ebrake system or other parts, i'll be more than happy to help, just PM me.

Re: 4th gen rear swap

LT1 brakes should be 11.65" just like the PBR 89-92 thirdgen brakes. THey will work good too.

Check out JJ's Automotive at http://jjsautomotiveracing.com/index.aspx

They can get you some rear brakes for cheap. I know those guys well and get all my 4th gen parts from them.
