Big Cam No Breaks? Go to Manual Breaks??

Some of you might know that Im building my car again..Im geting closer everyday. Iv got a healthy small block with a big cam and Im going to have an issue with breaks. I was going to do a hydroboost system..but not going to have power streering anymore. Worryed about a canister not being enought?? I know how old school cars are with man. breaks are..not a fan...if I was to convert mine to manual breaks would I like it or would it be the same as an old 60s-70s car? I need help! Is a vacuum canister the way to go or what?

That's alot of lift/dur, you may be ok?? I would try it and if not enough vacuum, get a pump. Jegs or Summit have many kinds of kits available. Make sure you get a street kit that'll hold up. I doubt if you'd like the manul brakes either...

I have converted mine to man. brakes. I haven't finished the car yet to bleed them though. Here is the thread I started on the conversion. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/orga...al-brakes.html

Re: Big Cam No Breaks? Go to Manual Breaks??

I would go with hydroboost. I started mine but have a LOOONG way t go. The pump I am using is from an 05 gmc savana full size van. The master cylinder bracket fits perfect on the hydroboost flat plate bracket. then cut off some of the master cylinder pedal rod (I cut off about 2.5") and then run the rod through a fine thread die cut off some of the hydroboost pump rod and thread that and get an adjust with the same threading as the die then install it. (I still have to cut the rod off of the hydroboost pump and thread it but it is fairly straight forward) This way as long as you keep power steering you will have brakes. PM me if you need any help or part #'s if you are interested.

Re: Big Cam No Breaks? Go to Manual Breaks??

Well we are going to run across each other pretty soon since I live in Nixa and frequent rogersville as often as I can. I also have a 3rd gen N/A SB with simular dims. 262/266@ .050 and 106LC . I have been using a canister for along time and have had no problems with lack of vacuum for breaking. So If you want to use one to just get the car running, go for it . then change if you like to a pump later on.

Re: Big Cam No Breaks? Go to Manual Breaks??

I know I would never rely on a cam that size to do anything for my brakes, but I also like to idle my motors low. I have a 264/271 dur@ .050 .626/.626 cam and idle it about 700-800rpm where it makes all of like 4-6" of vacuum. I'd go for either the vacuum pump, or manual cylinder with LS1 or C5 stuff at the tires. My manual master sucked on the stock brakes, but with the LS1 stuff on there now it is much more liveable.
