Brake lines are TOAST
I brought my recently bought 1992 RS to the mechanic today to look over the car. He said I need completely new brake lines under the car. I just looked on Youngs third gen parts website and they sell the complete system. I'm going to order the complete lines http://www.youngsfbody.com/inc/sdetail/31306
Has anyone used these? I assume they are pre bent and flared and all ready to be put in. I am going to call them tommorrow morning. I just need this car to pass inspection. It has a 305 TBI and a 5 speed if that helps.

they seem to be just the fronts, and seem to be the hardlines, but there is really no info there other than "brake lines" and the years.

I'll have to call them. If not, where else could I get the brake lines pre bent?

I used to live up north, Chicago in fact.
The land of salt, cinder and rust. Oh what memories....
I live down south now. I can reuse a muffler clamp on a 25 year old car!!
When you replace those a brake fluid pressure bleeder is a great benefit with brand new lines.

id recommend the Russell braided lines for the front, No sponge in my brake pedal! Make sure you get a decent amount of brake fluid, clear 2ltr, and 8-10ft of aquarium air hose, makes bleeding by yourself a cakewalk, and you can see the garbage that comes out of your lines!

I'm looking at that thread ^ right now too. Im visiting Inline Tube and Fine Line.
Good suggestion. Where can I find those braided lines? And do you think I could do these brake lines in my driveway on jackstands? I have a bleeder but will use that aquarium hose (thank god i already have fish, lol). Any guides on this?

Re: Brake lines are TOAST
What would be cheaper? Having it custom done by a shop or buying the pre bent tube and then having the shop install it? But thanks for the help so far.

Just out of curiosity why can't you just bend them yourself? Brake tubing bends fairly easily. Just take your time, work slow, and bend to the same shape of the OE lines.

Re: Brake lines are TOAST
The good thing about the ready-to-install lines is all the fittings are already on,
they are the right lengths, & they are not split or kinked, And, it would be easier to assemble, look & fit as designed...---IMO
You can buy the roll, cut, bend & flare it if you don't mind DIY.
Nothing wrong there either.

No no, you don't flare your own brake lines (and they need a double flare, not a single flare), you simply get an adapter with twin female ends and join two lines together if you can't find one line long enough. Maybe its just me but I just can't justify paying a premium simply because the lines are bent for me.

Re: Brake lines are TOAST
Well, if i get the pre bent lines, I would have a problem just getting it into the car, I would have to use the adapter. Also, I need the front to back lines and not the front.
Bending is just done by hand correct? Sorry, but I'm a 17 year old newbie on brakes Lol (This car is a learning experience).

You can buy rolls of brake line, and make everything from scratch and flare them yourself, its a "BUBBLE" flare, not a "DOUBLE" flare, totally different and not compatible.
you are right, replacing the front to back brake line, using a 1pc prebend piece would be pretty hard without a lift. It can be done, but its a bit tricky. you will have to drop the transmission crossmember, not a big deal, to do it, then be able to fish it up past the engine. and exhaust, steering ect on the driverside.
Be aware, you may not be able to get the rear flex line disconnected from the front to back line, and you may have to replace that too. For that matter, its probably not a bad idea to do that anyway. But as yoi open that can of worms, you may not be able to get the rear brake lines on the axle to disconnect from the flex line as well, and may have to replace them too.
the front to back line is 6mm, a little smaller than 1/4" line. If you try to make your own line, you need to find 6mm line, and the proper fittings.

Re: Brake lines are TOAST
Really helpful! Thanks. I want to buy the pre bent lines just because I feel that's the best way for me to do it. I'm going to call Inline Tube tommorrow to find out if it's "BUBBLE" Flared.
Now, my mechanic gave a suggestion of using a "union" ( I would guess similiar to a compression fitting, getting the plumbing side of me to kick in here Lol) would be a good idea to cut the line at the half (or wherever I am having trouble maneuvering it with the engine etc). I'm going to look for a braking diagram somewhere.
Now, does the flex line connect to the two rear calipers ? Are there plastic clips under the car that hold the tube in place? I'm going to get under the car tomorrow and take pics if I have to.
I'm also changing out the fuel lines as well.

The braided lines can be sought at http://www.russellperformance.com/mc...ses/main.shtml
They look nice, take away that sponge feel, and are very durable! Easy to install at that!
Her is what they look like

Nice, so I am going to just bend it myself and get the tools and the line. So its 6mm line for front to back and the axle?

Gonna need new flare nuts anyway due to rust. I found the right size. Thanks!

Re: Brake lines are TOAST
I am a big fan of buying them and bending yourself. Its VERY easy. I replaced a line from the engine compartment all of the way back on an S-10 and it was easy. I do understand that prebent is nicer looking but I bet you will still have to tweak the prebent ones. Wouldn't hurt to buy a cheap bender just in case. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Brake lines are TOAST
Ok wow I've just started reading this thread and, well, I've done a few brake lines myself... nothing real hot and heavy. Just replacement of some rusted out crap on various vehicles.
NOT that they are that hard to begin with, however, notoriouscamaro, I was pleased to see that you are going to do all the bending and other work yourself
LOL this may seem strange but an easy way to bend lines is to bend them around a beer bottle.
While prebent looks a little nicer, there is nothing like the experience of doing the job yourself and having the satisfaction of a job well done after the fact. Plus, it's obviously A LOT cheaper if you do it yourself!

Re: Brake lines are TOAST
Thanks a lot. I think something like brake lines should become a sticky since a lot of these thirgen's are becoming older and there not that much instruction for it anywhere. I am going to try to do a write-up on this.
I just came back from autozone with most of the parts. I had trouble finding the 3/16" 10mm x1mm brake line nuts. I will try another parts store tomorrow. I just found out that a regular double-flarer tool will do a bubble flare. Another Helpful thread- https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/brake-board/506416-replacing-brake-hard-line.html
I am also doing fuel lines along with a new fuel pump. (Will Post this elsewhere on the board). I'm looking forward to doing this on jackstands actually, haha. I will be borrowing someones garage so I don't freeze my *** off.

Re: Brake lines are TOAST
no it wont make a correct bubble flare, you need the right tool. I have both tools here and dont see how you would make a correct bubble flare with a double flare tool. You can probably fudge it, but i wouldn't try fudging things on a brake system. my cheap *** bubble flare tool cost 12 bux, had it for years.
Re: Brake lines are TOAST
Are you doing the rear hardlines as well? Mine has drums and it looks like the hardlines could twist or the screw might strip when trying to unscrew it from the original rubber drum brake line to replace it.
