9 bolt borg brakes help

ok guys i took a 9 bolt borg warner and used it in a street rod, unknown year donor camaro of firebird. no calipers came with it, so using my best guess of looking at the rotors ( they are the top hat looking type not the performance) i got caliper for an 87 camaro non performance. and with the pads in it it the caliper will not go on the rotor. from looking up dimensions the non performance option would have been the thicker of the two rotors.

my questions would be:

did the 9 bolts use the performance braking?

did they use different caliper mounting brakets?

how can i figure out which i am supposed have?

help help help help

thanks

In 89 only. The rotors were 11.7" with single piston alum (PBR) calipers.

Yes. You can see the differences in post #1 and post #20 in the following link. The first is for the standard 82-88 Delco-Moraine type which used 10.5" rotors and iron calipers, the second the so-called performance type used with the larger rotors/alum calipers mentioned above.

AH that is exactly what i was talking about. now i know what i am supposed to have and now i just need to figure out why the calipers wont fit over the rotor. i saw some thing in one of the posts that someone was saying about on the delco type that you were supposed to twist the piston to adjust it and not crush it in with a compressor or c clamp?

Yes those you need to turn and can easily be ruined if you (or someone else) used a c clamp in the past. If the pads used are not specifically for the rears but rather the same as the front pad, the caliper has to be put in on one side first (bottom, IIRC), then the other. There is only a slight difference in the pads, if the front pads are installed in the rear they will not just slide on like the fronts do, the pad backing plate hits the caliper mounting bracket.

Re: 9 bolt borg brakes help

well the solution was that the new caliper i had received had been turned out. cranked it back in and on it went. the pads that i got for the rear had a retainer tab on the back for a piston with a hole in it these pistons are flat and i had to break the tab off and grind off the nub that held it. but it looks like it will work now.

Re: 9 bolt borg brakes help

No trying to hijack this thread, but can i take my 1985 10.5" Rotor rear and install 11.7 Rotors without any Modification? I understand that i would need new calipers as well, but i'm prepared to purchase those.

No. You can't simply remove the calipers and rotors from the old style (82-88) and bolt up the new style (89-92) without removing the axles and replacing the backing plates. Check post #2.
