Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

I am not impressed with speed bleeders or with the Mit-y-vac bleeders.

I had this idea for one-man brake bleeding.

Add a barb fitting to an extra reservoir cap. Use a garden sprayer with rubber vacuum line to lightly pressurize the master cylinder reservoir with air. It's not introducing air to the fluid, because the barb fitting is behind the rubber gasket. The gasket is pushing on the fluid. Crack open a bleeder and the pressure will push the fluid through.

Will pressurizing the reservoir push fluid through the lines?

Whaddya think? (If I'm smokin' dope, please be kind...)

Should work, just need to be sure not to run the reservoir dry.

That's how the Mityvac does it, when you've got the right kit.

I have a 4th gen LS booster/master and a Motive power bleeder. Works awesome.

Re: Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

Seems like an awful lot of WORK... (please don't ban me for using such FOUL language)

Usually I just open the bleeder screws and sit back and wait... give em a minute or 2, and fluid comes bubbling up out of there all on its own.

Of course I'm not on flagged hours, so the extra 5 minutes or so doesn't bother me too bad. I usually have other things I can be doing at the same anyway.

Gravity never sleeps, as a tower crew once told me.

I have one of these Motive pressure bleeders.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MVP-0250/

It has adapters for my Ford, GM, and Dodge vehicles.

I just did the brakes on my Firebird, worked great, just have to make sure the rectangular cap is fitted correctly and tight on the reservoir to keep it form leaking under pressure. Flows a lot of fluid, you can bleed the system pretty quickly by yourself.

.
That takes my idea a step further - puts the new fluid in as the old fluid goes out. Pretty sweet.

Re: Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

Which adapter do I need for an '88 Firebird Formula 350?
My car is in storage right now, so I can't measure the dimensions of the reservoircap...

Thanks from Holland!

My Dad swore by gravity bleeding, when I did my new lines etc. last spring I just put a pan under the rear bleeders and went and did something else for a while, works great.

Re: Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

Well you don't have a metal reservoir, so that kinda suggests the second one.

Re: Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

Motive told me to use the first one....

I guess I have to get to the car and measure the reservoir to be sure...!

Re: Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

Reservoir cap measures about 4,7 by 6,5 inch.
So I need adapter # 1115.
Thanks.

Re: Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

I just use a el-cheapo autozone hand pump bleeder but instead of using the hand-pump, I connect it to a engine vacuum line and works like a charm.

Re: Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

I just tried the Motive Power Bleeder. I couldn't get the adapter to seal. A few pumps, and a stream of brake fluid squirted out of the master cylinder. It made a big mess, so I'm going to do the gravity bleed method.

Re: Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

Gravity bleeding the calipers works for me. Just make sure you leave the cap off the master cylinder, do one caliper at a time, and don't let the master cylinder go dry. Make sure to reinstall the cap before you jump in and test the pedal!

Re: Pressure bleeding - Will it work?

I use this one, it works every time. Quick easy one person operation. You just have to keep the reservoir full. Harbor Freight sells a smaller one for around $30.
