brake line fitting sizes?

Can someone tell me if the third gens had metric fittings or not. Same goes for the 93-97 4th gens. The reason I ask is that I put a complete disc rear from a 97 T/A into my 91Z28 a few years ago. The rear center line bolted up just fine or so I think. I emailed Tobin at Kore3 nd asked him what hehad for a complete 5 line kit for my car which will now have a C5 front brake kit. He said something about me having to change or modify the rear axle hard line because he doesnt have access to M10x1 ISO bubble flare tee fitting so he would supply a 3/8-24 inverted flare like the 4th gen cars. Im lost here. I need to replace every single line on the car so now is the time for me to order the correct hard and braided lines but Im under the assumption that the 4th gens used standard threads now.

FWIW, M10x1 and 3/8-24 threads are almost identical so it is possible to thread a male and female fitting of each together. Im starting to think I may have done this when I put the 4th gen rear in and hooked it up to my stock hard line under the car which I assume is M10.

Can someone clear this up for me? Im looking around now for a complete hard line kit and braided kit and I would really like to order it all from one place.

Re: brake line fitting sizes?

all 3rd and 4th gens after 84ish used metric ISO bubble flare fittings.

I thought all the factory rear flex lines from the body to the axle had the same threads? Im not sure why you would need a separate T fitting? or what Tobin is trying to do there.

You shoujld be able to use the 4th gen flex line from the axle to the car, the only variable would beif the fitting on the body side is the same, im unsure if it is, but people do this 4th gen axle swap all the time, and i have never heard otherwise.

The SAE threads were always inverted flare, and not the bubble flare of these cars, so it would be pretty obvious if you were to look at the two to tell what was bubble and what was not, if that was an issue. But its not since both cars are metric ISO bubble flare.

I was always under the assumption that the 3rd and 4th gens all used metric fittings but Tobin threw a curve ball into this belief. I am just going to try and find the 3 piece rear hose kit for the 4th gen LT1s and go from there. Flynbye has everything I need BUT his reputation here isnt the best anymore so I am on the fence on whether or not I should place an order with him or not. If anyone knows a vendor that sells braided rear LT1 lines then let me know. It is the only part I cant find at the moment for my complete brake overhaul.

Depends on the year of your 3rd gen car. They were changing over in 1987/88.

It was earlier than that, my 86 is metric, and I'm pretty sure late 85's were too.

The only thread that I'm unsure as to if it changed size during the metric years is the fitting on the rear hardline just before the flex hose to the axle.

The general consensus for SAE is 82-84. My 85 is metric.

Re: brake line fitting sizes?

Scott at BBU is supposed to be getting some supplies in this week to make me a 5 line braided hose setup for my application. I could not for the life of me find a vendor that just sold a 3 piece braided hose kit for a 4th gen Fbody with no traction control so I was either going to have to buy a complete 5 piece kit for a 4th gen and try to sell the two front hoses or find someone that could make me what I needed. Hopefully this works out with Scott.

How did your brake lines work out? I've got the same problem right now.

Re: brake line fitting sizes?

Just ran into this on my 92 Formula - - it has a retrofitted 9-bolt with cast-iron calipers and I'm upgrading the brakes to a complete PBR setup. I went to screw on the axle hardline fitting to the brake hose and it stripped my brand new braided hose fitting - - now junk. Hard to tell, but that Summit part is backwards to what we need, isn't it? Shouldn't it be a female -4AN onto the hardline, and a male 10mmx1.0 into the brake hose?

Re: brake line fitting sizes?

That fitting allows you to run -4 braided lines to your calipers.
