Rear Disc upgrade question

Is anyone familiar with Right Stuff Brakes? I was looking at this kit because it seems to be all-inclusive:

The Right Stuff | F82RD78Z | Disc Brake Conversions (getdiscbrakes.com)

My car is an '87 Camaro sport coupe going through a twenty+ year restomod. I have a 3.4 V6 with a 252 Comp Cams K-Kit, headers, exhaust, and MSD ignition, so I doubt I'm pushing much more than 200 horses, if that. I'm just looking for ease of maintenance ease of buying parts (these come in a kit) and a little style.

I was wondering if I need to change my proportion valve from a disc/drum to a disc/disc. I reached out to the manufacturer, but you guys are usually quicker.

Thanks.

Re: Rear Disc upgrade question

Not avoiding your question, but while your doing your research reach out to Scott at bigbrakeupgrade to see if he has a kit for you, maybe cheaper? And maybe better? Worth asking him.

Re: Rear Disc upgrade question

I looked at their site and it all looks more expensive than the kit I'm looking at. Thank you for the advice though.

Also, for posterity's sake and for future questions and searches:

Right Stuff reached out to me and said: Hello,

Thank you for checking and yes, the valve would need to be for a 4 wheel disc brake application.

And Summit Racing reached out also and said:

Thank you for your question. In order to get the optimal functionality out of the Right Stuff Detailing F82RD78Z disc brake kit, the brake proportioning valve should be changed to a disc/disc setup for proper pressure to the rear brakes.

Thanks all.

Re: Rear Disc upgrade question

Email Scott, he does kits that are not on his site. I did a rear kit from him, just simple but better than what came on the car, and good price.
But the kit your looking at is good too. Doesn't hurt to send an email before you buy though, never know.

Re: Rear Disc upgrade question

Gotta go with buddy on this. I just don't think that kit will offer much improvement, if any. BBU (Scott) is very helpful. Maybe shop around a bit more or try getting a used kit on here.

Re: Rear Disc upgrade question

I purposely avoided commenting because I don't like suggesting to someone to not to do what he wants to do. So I was waiting for the comments to start coming in, knowing they would be "don't do it." And I agree, but not simply "just because."

If you already had this rear disc brake system, and you wanted better-functioning, clean, new calipers, then I'd say go for the nice replacement parts. But since you're starting from scratch and doing a full drum-to-disc conversion, where you have to purchase everything anyway, then, yes, there are better conversions/parts out there.

While Scott/BBU = amazing, I don't think he offers such conversions. But Ed at Flynbye does. And he offers them specifically for the much better PBR brake upgrade.
Product Listing (flynbye.com)

If you scroll through the four pages of the 3rdgen portion of Ed's catalog in the link above, then you'll find the drum-to-disc conversion parts are available for 3 different sizes. And when you add the price of the brake kits, themselves, also on those pages, then the total looks very similar to the price of the kit you're looking at from The Right Stuff. But this would be much, much better.

Ed also has a thread for the conversion, from way back when he began offering it. Everything you'd need to know is in here.

Re: Rear Disc upgrade question

After re-reading your original post, do you still have 15" wheels? And you're not only looking at a rear drum-to-disc conversion, but also replacing all of the front components, too. If so, then I'm retracting my suggestion from my post above.

People don't often ask about brake upgrades for 15" wheels, so the suggestions around TGO are always to dump the Delco-Moraine metric caliper set-ups, in favor of better, larger brakes.

But the kit you selected includes nearly everything you'll need to do all four corners, and it will fit 15" wheels, for which there aren't many other simple upgrade options. It should be just fine.

Re: Rear Disc upgrade question

Re: Rear Disc upgrade question

Thank you guys for all the advice.

Yes, I have the 15 inch wheels, whicn I'm pretty sure I'm keeping and getting restored.. Twenty-five-ish years ago when I started this project, I was all about bigger, better, faster, harder, louder. I tore out the air conditioner and threw it out because I felt the need. The need for speed. I wanted a primer gray paint job with a hundred of those bullethole decals.

These days, I'm a bit more about restoration and comfort. I'm sourcing a new air conditioner system and am filled with some regret over things I did to the car in my youth. I kind of just want to put things back together, if only a "better" together. My car was a bare-bones no extras Sport Coupe, with no power anything. Now that I see the value in some of those creature comforts, that's my goal.

I appreciate all the advice, I always have, and I always will. Just remember that some of us with low post counts are still dinosaurs who lurked long before they registered and who have read all of the posts. All of them. Especially the ones about the reliability and speed of answers of some of these specialized builders and vendors. While we are all, obviously, passionate about what we do with our beloved third-gens, and full of knowledge about our particular builds, we need to remember that each build is its own, with its own dreams and visions.

A forum poster whose name I can't remember put it into simpler terms for us a long time ago: One color inside. One color outside. Couple hundred horsepower.

I dug it then. I dig it now.

Thanks all.
