A single 10 in a sealed box would probably make you happy. A good setup could be acheived for around $400 (amp, sub, box).

I've always been for JL Audio subwoofers, and I like clean amps. In your case I think a Phoenix Gold QX180.2 ($180), and either a single 10W0-4 ($100) or 10W3-2 ($150) would be an awesome system for the price.

JLs are nice but kind of expensive compared to others. If you are not looking to shake the state I would go for some JBL GT series. Sealed boxes are best for rock. The bass is tighter in a sealed box.

Lightning Audio subs sound really good. Whatever you get just get an amp w/ at least half the RMS power of the sub

Lightning Audio subs are crap. Stick with the better name brands like Rockford, MTX, JL, and Kicker. Lightning Audio may sound good if you have never really heard what "good" is, then you will be wishing you had more.

Stick with a name brand. There are tons of other brands, but u get what u pay for. Cheap sub, mean cheap quality stray from things like pyle, legacy, pyramid, cerwin-vega & hyper pro. (You'll see alot of these on ebay)... I stick with the reputable brands - lanzar, polk, Rockford fosgate, MTX... JL is very good but in the higher price rang. For one 10". i would go with an MTX 10" 6000 in a sealed box. If u want to pay quite a bit for a amp go with a matching mtx amp. Persoanly i perfer Earthquakes DBX12 series, cone is wovin with kevlar to prevent tearing, And they bump LOUD.

Ok. Thanks for the advice. Now can someone piece me together a system. I am not smart when it comes to stereo electronics. I was looking through Crutchfield and with all the numbers they list I got confused. I am looking for a 10"sub, amp, box, and all hardware needed for install for around 400 bucks.
Thanks
Matt

Go to a reputable stereo shop and ask them. When you ask us what brands are good we can only tell you the ones we like, you could hate the sound of the same speakers I love. Sound is a matter of opinion, there is no best, llke food I could say something tastes good and you cant even swallow it becouse it tastes so awful. The only way you can figure out what is best is by listening to them yourself.

My personal preferance for subwoofers is Memphis. I'm not a fan of JL for a few reasons which I wont get into becouse it would raise hell But if you want I can get a pic of the one 10" W0 we have at work we use for a penholder .

"legacy, pyramid, cerwin-vega & hyper pro"

How is Cerwin-Vega compairable to Legacy, or Pyramid, ect. They have been making subwoofers probably longer than you have been alive. Granted they became famous for making stage concert subwoofers (ie. - for rock concerts) but they still earned some respectablity in car audio circles. Did you ever hear of a Cerwin Vega Stroker? Granted other companies have come a long way since Cerwin Vega invented the "grandpa" of todays SPL monsters but they were still at the forefront. Also, I'll admit that the cheapest CV's are problably OK at best but so are the cheapest subs of most companies.

Show a little respect.

Go with like a Alpine Type-R 10 and a RF 120.2 amp. You can get both for dirt cheap prices and they are about the perfect match up for one another. That is the exact combo my buddy is installing in his '94 T/A. It sound damn good. However he also has a complete Alpine sound system in his car. It makes G&R and AC/DC scream man and Nirvana has never sounded so fine.

If u want just a little bass, u can hit yer local future shop... I would never recommend this for anything else, but I've seen MTX Blue Thunders with box for like 159.99 and a 600 watt Kenwood amp for 169.99..... Pretty cheap, and it should do the job if u want minor bass....

i listen to mostly punk, 80's hair metal, and old rock.....my Rockford HE2's are perfect for the job and i bought both of mine at Best Buy for 100 each (thank *** for open box items )...the HE2's also have a little extra sumthin just for when you feel like being naughty in front of grandma and grandpa at a stoplight best buy also has Rockford Punch subs in boxes for like 70 bucks (sounds like a deal, huh?) if youre just looking for a little bass and not bone crunching SPL i think basically any quality sub (MTX, Rockford, yadda, yadda, yadda) would be fine its basically personal preferance and budget ...ive heard that rockford amps are outstanding and phoenix gold makes quality products....thank *** i didnt buy a JL pen-holder W0 lol... everything sounds better on a nice system.

Saying that the JL, and CV subs are only good for pen holders and the Alpine type-r, rockford or whatever else kind of sub should be held on a pedistal above everything else and worshiped is like saying that black third gens are worthless and ugly, and only the red third gens ones should be able to drive on the street. You have to listen to the subs to see what you like the best. Some people don't like red, some don't like black, and you could have people describe them all day long but untill you see them you don't know what they are talking about. You could hear some people say that red cars are ugly, and black ones are awesome, then you will hear people say the opposite, but untill you see them you wopuldn't know what you like best. Likewise some don't like JLs, and some don't like Alpine. You wouldn't beable to know unless you hear them yourself. I listened to the Alpines and the JLs, and I decided to go with the JL W6s. They are both nice it is just a matter of taste.
