cheap systems.....

hey guys, i'm not a car audio freak really, but i know a decent amount. i was wondering about a good, extremely low cost setup. i have like no cash, i don't even have a cd player, just a jvc 35x4 tape deck, and i want something that looks decent and has good bass. but here is my hang up, right now, 200 dollars is equivalent to a friggin life savings right now. I plan on maybe a legacy amp(i know i know) and some cheap subs, but i'm not sure where to buy some cheap subs that sound ok and don't blow up alot. JC whitney has some decent priced ones, i belive they are pyramids or something? i dunno. and best buy has like lightning audio subs on 2fer deals all the time. whats my best bet??? i just want to actually HEAR my bass when the t tops are off and my car is rumblin(mmmmmm dual exhaust)

well hate to say it, but you want two different things here... a cheap set up, and good bass. And just like the legacy lines, pyramids are the bottom of the bucket. If you just want a system just to have it, then buy them. If you want decent bass, save up your money and spend it wisely

Car: '89 GTA 350 hardtop
how`s that for instance: I got a mtx 50wx2 amp for 100 usd;
a mtx 10`` sub for some 20usd;
a stinger amp wiring kit for some 30 usd.

then I made a sealed box for some 10-15 usd.
the result: a low power setup, but with decent quality and tight, accurate bass.

so, as a concluision, if you don`t listen to much hip hop(I like metal), get good quality parts instead of junk you`ll hate later.

PS: bon`t let the low amp power rating fool you: this little thing cranks out some 175w bridged into 4 ohms...

try this

two blueprint 1001's (80 ea) from missiondigital.net OR
two Shivas (125 ea) from http://adireaudio.com/car_audio/subwoofers/shiva.htm

power it off of a JBL bp 1200.1 or 600.1 depending on money. (check bsless.com for good prices)

build an mdf box yourself for <$20.

order a jbl bp 180.2 for the interiors, cross them over.

these subs will give you >140db provided you can fit them in a properly built box.

you win some,you lose some

my favorite budget system: homemade sealed box,2 12" pioneer IMPP subs (I sold this to my friend for $20 after my car was stolen and I had no use for it) i don't know who made the box or the dimensions,it's about 6-8" deep,wide enough to mount two 12"s. we had to re-seal the entire box and speakers with Archer* silicone caulking,the builder wasn't much of a carpenter.....for power,we used a California series Profile amp (single channel 500 watt max rating....figure 250rms or 150 "real" watts) which my friend purchased new at circuit city for $180,the subs were wired in parallel to the amp for a 2 ohm load.....max output,it has a level control and an adjustable crossover which works well at 90Hz low pass. it sounds amazingly clear and rolls perfectly with the inside mids and highs,which have since been powered by a pioneer deck $175 new from the BX (airforce base),allowing the prophile amp to run via RCA which is the only way to go,switching from the line converter to the RCAs was like night and day,using the high level inputs is out of the question,usually the right sound starts at the deck anyways.

I would setup a high pass cross over for all of your inside speakers at 100-120Hz high pass,you will be amazed at the difference! then work on the bass,if you have power cables ready to hook up,you can test used stuff and maybee get a better deal,if it works when you buy it and you take care of it,you could easilly get more than your monies worth.

i will vouch for the cheap stuff,but it will not come close to what JL or alpine,Rockford,ect...can do,nor should you expect the same performance. it's like my toyota corolla,it's a solid car,it will provide me transportation anywhere i want to go,it will last forever,but if i start driving it as hard as I did with my Trans Am.......it may very well fall apart within a day!!....get the idea?
