HEy guys,
I have (well had) two nice sub woofers, but I guess they couldn't handle bumpin and bein in a sealed box, cuz one of their surrounds blew. It blew so bad that over time before I noticed half the surround was separated from the frame of the sub. Its a clean rip along the very outer part of the surround, did I mention it was foam surround? Can this be fixed, or am I gonna be lookin for some Santopreme surround Orion XTRS? These did bounce and they play good but I am leaking air like a mo fo, help me out please.

is it a tear or just came unglued? If its just unglued try superglueing it back, no big deal. If its a tear then it needs to be replaced. I would contact Orion or the shop you bought it from to get replaced. While generic surrounds work, they aren't necessarily the correct surround (most likely not).
BTW, it being foam has NOTHING to do with it. Foam and rubber have totally different properties for restraint and such, the designer design's around one or the other.....neither is superior in any way just different. Some company's prefer rubber, others prefer foam, they then design accordingly.

It pretty much separated in a clean line, I have tried supergluing it but I think they are done for. The surround rotted away it looks like, I got them off of ebay so I am screwed on that deal, maybe I'll look into some XTR's w/ some santoprene surround. They did hit hard, its a shame, cuz the magnets and voice coils are still perfectly fine, I just have one leak that is a 15" crack in the circumference of the speaker. Oh well, life goes on. Nice Monte by the way.

if its the center section and not the surround try some clear nail polish and tissue paper and put it on the back it will seal it up and harden. cheap easy fix. may not last long but it will work. hope i dont run into that problem with my typers. speaking of which the other day one of them just quit workin and i looked at the back of the sub and the wire from the terminals to the actual speaker appeared to have burned through. what can cause this. i am running a sony 760 watt amp and have it half way up so it cant be getting to much power.
ive heard of some places that re-foam the surrounds of speakers, im not sure if its expensive or not, but its worth it to look for... and as for the difference in the foam and rubber surrounds... there is basically only 1 major difference... the foam breaks down, rubber lasts forever....
Just a thought for you. I have a pair of XTR 12"s from an old install. In the old car they were in around 2.0 cubic feet ported and they slammed. Now they are in 1.6 sealed and they don't seem to do as well. I think they are happier in a larger ported box if you really want them to slam. At least that is what my experience has shown me. I'm putting these subs in my wife's car and getting something else that I know likes a sealed enclosure. I'm looking into Alpine Type R"s, Eclipse subs, or something like CDT or Image Dynamics. As you can tell I'm not so much into the loud bass anymore. But if that is the case why did I buy a amp with 900 watts RMS?
