Is This Dangerous...?

I've got my Infinity 4x6's in the dash amped from my amplifier in the trunk area...but I found without tweets the high-end just wasn't cutting it. As my home audio sub experiment worked so well, I ended up bridging my front L/R outs off the deck (free because I only used the pre-outs), and ran them brdiged to a Mirage home audio center channel mounted on the dashpad - the soundstage is amazing, crisp, and full, exactly what I was looking for. I just want to know if it's a bad idea to have a setup like this...? I've played it for a good while with no problems, and it sounds unreal...hate to give it up. =)

The only differenc should be that the home audio speakers are 8 ohms instead of the common 4 Ohm impedance found in car audio.

The amp in your head unit is not designed to be bridged. It'll live a very short life if you leave it that way.

That's not necessarily true. I have seen many different variations of impedances in both car and home audio. Though the car audio doesn't typically go higher than 8 ohm. I do have 8 ohm JL 12W0's in my truck though. And there are 8, 16, 32 ohm home audio speakers... it just varies.

Anyone else verify this? That'd be a real stupid way for me to lose a head unit...

yes. i verify it. In my blaupunkt i did something similar. I had my right rear channel hooked up to a 6x9 and a tweeter... needless to say, i'm getting my brother to install a new ampifyer in the headunit. If you use the amps in the head unit for anything except what they're supposed to do, they'll blow. Do you and your head unit a favor and don't do that anymore...

Hooking 1 channel to a 6x9 and a tweeter is completely safe. The tweeter's power draw is so low that its impedance characteristics are negledgable. I'm not digging up one of my circuits book to give a 100% accurate answer, but if I recall correctly, in addition to the impedance of each amp being too low to handle when bridged, if the amp is not specifically designed to be bridged, it can cause other problems. I just don't remember why off the top of my head. I think it may have to do with the biasing of the FETs and how that's effected by the paralleled relationship of a bridged pair.

If the speaker is 8 Ohms, won't the current draw on the combined channels be halved?

yeah, it will, but like I said above, there's more involved with it than just the impedance.

Sorry, didn't even see your previous post.....now that you mention all the transistor biasing stuff, you're probably right, but I don't remember specifics (It's been a long time since Navy Electronics Tech. 'A' school...LOL)....Instead of a single channel, then, Azure, I would recommend 2 speakers for your center channel (so you're still getting both L&R channels, and not ruining your stereo imaging) Am I correct in assuming you have the speaker mounted above the HVAC controls? If so, just remove The Mirage and hook up your two speakers in the same location, one to left speaker output, the other to the right. BTW, what kind of Infinitys do you have in the dash?
