Late model CD in third gen
Late model CD in third gen
Ok, I am trying yo put a CD from a 2002 Malibu into my 87 Iroc. I have the unit, the plugs and my service man at the Chevy dealership said he could unlock it once I got it in. The only thin gI need now is the wiring diragram. Anybody know where I can get this, or will I just have to buy a Chilton for the car it came out of. Thanks guys.

If you need the diagram for the Iroc, you can go to www.iroczone.com.
That's not a double din radio is it? I had a 2001 or 2002 radio cd player out of a cavalier and it was a double din. If it is you're going to have a hard time installing it. I gave up, because there didn't seem to be enough room in the radio pod and if I did get it in, it would hit the AC/ heater controls. I just installed a 98 T/A cd player as it was easier.Good luck on your install. Post picks if you get it in.

The ones that are stock in these cars are double din sized. Now there may have been something else preventing it from fitting, but it wasn't the double din size. Every radio that GM has installed since the early 80s has been double din.

I just got done installing a Kenwood head unit in my TA. II found that clearance in the pod is a big issue. I had to use the largest face plate adapter from the kit I got to do it. The whole assembly sticks out like 2 inches or so from the pod. Don't get me wrong it doesn't look bad. I am just making the observation. Clearance issues are part of the situation.
Without an aftermarket radio installation kit you will not have the ability to make concessions for the size of the unit without either cutting your heating ducts or fabbing up something for the face of the radio pod.
I have to wonder why you would want to install a GM factory unit out of any car. Factory head units aren't worth the time and effort. You can get a powerfull bare bones Kenwood or Pioneer unit that will do far better than that GM unit.

I am not looking to win any sound compititions. I like the clean look of a factory hed unit. The porblems that you had with fit are another reason. The reason the aftermarket head units do not fit, is because the factory unit is taller and less deep. So the late model factory unit will fit without this problem. I looked at many aftermarket head units and did not really like the look of any of them. I wanted a more clean look. All of the units i saw seemed to be aimed at the compitition style sound system, and that is ot what I am after. I have a 2002 Impala and the sound system is decent. That is all I am after, decent sound with a clean look. I know that if I want compitition quality sound I need to go with an aftermarket unit, but that is not what I am after. The later model GM haed units actaully sound pretty decent. Have you ever listen to the Monsoon system in a late model Camaro? Any way, sorry for the long post, but I wanted to clear that up. Besides, when I am done the entire install will have cost me under $100. The aftermarket doesn't have a CD player that will sound half as good as a GM unit, for that kindof money installed.
I didn't realize they had gone to a double din size. As soon as you said that I looked at the stereo in my 2002 Impala and realized you are right. We'll see what happens. Grants85ta, I didn't even catch were you pointed this out in your previous post.
