head unit help
i'm thinking about getting a new head unit because i can't stand my factory radio anymore (RPO UT4). i was wondering if any of you guys have head units that have the same dimensions as the factory head units? i don't want have some ugly backing plate holding the radio in place and concealing the space around it. i would rather have the radio's size do that. any info is greatly appreciated. :hail:
P.S. if you guys could tell me what brands you guys use in your rides it would help me out too.

The mounting bracket actually looks really nice, and its alot easier since you have alot more choices in the DIN size as opposed to the 1.5 DIN sized units, which also usually cost more money as well.

you could check out JC whitney or crutchfield they may have some thing that you are looking for. But be prepaired to pay for it.

The 1.5 D.I.N. radios do tend to cost a little more (guess its b/c there more vehicle specific) but I have an D.I.N. Alpine head w/the mounting kit and it looks fin. There are advantaged to the 1.5 D.I.N.'s though you generally get big eq's and both tape and CD but, who uses tapes anymore. If you really wanna still with the 1.5 and spend the money, I say go for it! but for the money and varity, the single D.I.N is the way to go.

first off thanks for the great feedback. yeah i have been looking on crutchfield.com these days and i found 3 models from 2 brands being audiovox and pioneer. i like the 2 pioneer models that came up which are the DEH-P47DH and the DEH-P77DH, the P47 is $250 and the P77 is $300. both are CD receivers with Cd changer controls even though i have no intention of getting a changer since my trunk leaks (which is how my amp got fried), though i have to say they they have some decent power. Do any of you have either of these units? i'd like to get some real info about them. oh yeah, is it me or do the dash speakers have short wires? when i replaced the front left speaker those wires gave me a heck of a time. i probably need to get my GTA rewired. bad enough my bro made a mess with his audio adventure when the car was his. eh i can't blame him, i woulda done the same lol.

btw, did any of you who bought new head units have to change the connectors for the power, speakers or antenna?

what ever stereo you get, get a chev connector to pigtail kit.. basically it is a connector on 1 end and wires which are labeld on the other.. then you solder the wires to your stereo harness.
I bought a pioneer 9400 (standard size deck) and with a little hidden cutting I go a flush mount kit and it looks great. If you still didn't like it, you could paint it to match the interior or something.
