if you only have 400 watts i would suggest going for a sub with a high sensitivity level.

an adire tempest would work very well if you can find the box space for it http://www.adireaudio.com

www.cbrstereo.com has some PG Ti's for a good price

sonys are not now for their quality or longevity

pretty much any sub out their other than pyramid and lightning audio are better than the sony's on the market right now. I myself would go with the tempist, for the price those subs are awesome.

W7s are excellent subs but they arent all that the salesman here make them out to be. They certainly arent the "best sub in the world by far" as i was told. A little overpriced IMO

YOU COULD FIT THEM both in the car, maybe not in an angled box but they will go in the car.

Ive got those 12s and for the money I paid for em I think the RMS rating for them is pretty damn good. Something like 350 RMS right? Im pleased with them at least...

I think the problem with the sony's is the cone material, its cheap , it distorts very easy and for that reason the rms rating sony gives those subs is a joke. You may be able to put 350 into it but you'll get a TON of distortion.

Selling off the name alone.
Back in the day a product was sold on its own merits and quality,
these days they sell on their names alone.

Most people who are into car audio are aware about sony's line of car audio and wont purchase any of it but a Noobie wont know any better and think, sony ps2 is good so i bet these subs kick ***!

Now hold on for a second here. I have a low end system (low because of low cash.. anyone want to donate some 4x6's and some decent 6x9's? J/K ) and I have a Sony sub, the same exact 1200W pentagonal cone the person who started this thread was referring to. Now, I know that I will NEVER be going into a sound system competition other than to be a spectator, and I do NOT expect the Sony to perform as high as Sony says it does. The main reason I bought the sub is because it fit in my budget and I like the styling, even if the sound quality sucks. I have heard Sony's shelf systems before (Yes, I do know that home audio is different from car audio, but I am attempting to make some sort of point here) because my friend has one. It sucked compared to my ancient RCA shelf system, which literally bites the dust compared to my Philips. If their car audio is anything like their home audio, then the sub will suck. I, like I said before, am just looking for a little punch to my music, the little bit of punch the music has in the first place, and am not going to perform.

Having said this, I must add that I have not even touched upon the sub's powers, what little there is of them. I have been rather busy spending money and time on repairs to the engine of my car and other things, and have yet to put the Sony in a box, so it sits right now on my back enclosed porch in the store box. I don't expect anything significant out of the sub and never will. Never compare the PS2 to Sony's audio crap. The PS2 is one of few things other than some remote controls that Sony has gotten right. For audio, Sony may suck, but I like my sub, how little power it gets from my Jensen amp, anyways no matter what others may think.

The subs dont handle power thats the point! Hook up an amp that has output that the sony subs says they can handle and you'll have a distorting, rattling POS in your car.
Some subs will produce clean bass as long as they are fed a clean signal, sony isnt one of those subs.

Im glad your happy with your sony, Some people are happy with a am radio and two 6x9's sitting on the floor of their car in no box at all.

well im not sure about that...sonys explode line is definitely entry level equipment, and most people will run those subs with an entry level amp so they wont sound as good as they can. Maybe if a high quality low distortion amp was run to the sub with a subsonic filter it could sound decent. You would be surprised how good you can make a crappy speaker sound in a good install.
Just a thought, ive never owned explode subs myself

Well, the sub is rated at 360W RMS, and I fed it 340W RMS at 4 ohms with no probelms until I turned the volume REALLY high, higher than I normally would have it in any circumstance, but I think that may have been my POS Legacy stuff and not the sub. I'll have to see what it does when I finally get my box made.

However, like I said, none of Sony's audio equipment is worth a damn unless you like looking at it. It cannot be compared to the PS2 because the PS2 is a whole different ball of wax.

If Im gonna have Superb cost worthy speakers theyre gonna be sitting in my house. Id rather not have 2000.00 worth of subs/amps in my car. Sony serves me fine. Ive had em for about a year now. They havent broke, and they sound pretty good in my opinion. Im by no means gonna sell em and waste money on another system. It suits my needs for bass for now....Just a thought
