Well, my screen just came in for my carputer. what a sweet device it is. check it.

Screen hooked to one of my old laptops

Screen closeup

I was just wondering though, if anyone out there already installed a simmilar product like this in their car...where did you put it? I can't find a single place to put this item where it wouldn't block something needed on my dash. Any advice would be greatly apreciated.

I saw one installed on the pass side on the dash, where the glove box would be if it had one

I'm not sure about size, and mounting options that they give you, but my first thought is just above the heater controls.

Well my dash looks like Steves dash. (sorry d00d. I stole your dash from my steering wheel post. Hope you don't mind).

Ohhhh....that does pose a bit of a problem. How about figureing out a way to put it in your headliner and have it flip down?

Maybe, just make it so you can stick it to the windshield, or dashboard when you want to use it, and it "hides" somewhere when you don't

Want to do a lot of fabricating? Take out the two guages that have oil preasure, temp, batt in them. Trim the dash to make the LCD fit in there and then get an A pillar cluster with the guages you removed in it.

EDIT: ANother thought is to take out the vents and 1 guage and put it in there and either use the cluster.

Unless you're getting a special dash, can't you just hang it from your rearview?

Well...

I installed the TFT. What I did was this.
  • Pry gently until one side slipped out
  • removed vents
  • created a plexiglass plate to fit the interior of the vent enclosure to close it off
  • sanded it to fit the enclosure nice and snug like
  • fiberglassed it using some fiberglass bought at crappy tier
  • painted it same colour as interior
  • mounted the stand using the double sided 3M tape
  • used self tapping screws to make a final real secure hold
  • installed screen...

I have pictures of it installed at home. I am at worrk right now so I will have to upload the pics when I get home. As for those vents well...seeing as I don't have AC and don't plan on driving this car in the winter I didnt think they would be missed much.

I was thinking of installing my 12.1" where my map holder is. I was just going to have it on a folding/swiveling arm. I am going to put black vinyl on the back so that when its folded against the dash its completely hidden from the view of theives.

Add a modified Xbox and you have the ultimate 3rd Gen

I've got a qustion. Why are you mounting that? Couldn't you get an aftermarket overhead console TV, and run the computer into that? Unless you're using the laptop you already have and it doesn't have TV out....

I guess there's lots of reasons, especially if you wanted to temporarily mount that one, and remove it for dual purpose.

Tell me more about your project? I've always loved the idea of a carputer, and even had one mocked up in the console of my 89 caprice, but I got mobilized and sold the car before I got the computer runnin. oh well

Ok...let me run this down

The reason there is double sided tape on the harness is so you can pre-mount the harness and then drill the holes and screw it into place. Makes things easier then having to somehow hold the item still while its being mounted.

As for the overhead console. Well all the over head consoles I seen were just coax or RCA and couldn't produce a picture as clean as this monitor. Thats the reason why I went with this monitor. This monitor has VGA input which is real clean looking. It supports 640X480, 800X600, and 1024X768. Also this monitor has componnt and Svideo inputs. I am planning on putting a computer in the car and a component video hookup is no where near clean enough to work with. Also this baby has a touch screen which is real cool.

Well here are pics of the install

I am still thinking of getting a roof mounted screen to use with a DVD player or a gaming console. Something to keep my passenger busy while we are on a long trip.
