On the bird i drilled mine on the drivers side in the little corner there of the firewall. YOu can feed the wire through and pretty much feel it come through by just pulling off the kick panel. The rs's i just did yesterday and just had to make my exsisting hole bigger as there was already a hole there for my alarm wire. ANd my stereo wiring was 8 awg. Just make sure you put a grommet in the hole before you feed the wire. THe hole is right next to a cable that runs through i think its for the cruise control.

On cars that have the battery on the passenger side, I've found the passenger side kick panel, an inch or 2 away from the antenna grommet, to be the best spot. On cars with the battery on the driver's side, I drill a hole in the firewall in the vicinity of the clutch master cylinder.

I've got that grommet on my '86. Didn't realize it was a grommet, though, for my first amplifiers... and drilled two holes (one for each power wire) thru the firewall on the driver's side.
I realized it was a plug later on. Maybe it's year-dependant? My battery is on my driver's side, and I also have an automatic- and my car's an '86.
Remember to drill from the "inside" of the car towards the engine. There's a ton of stuff in the dash that you don't want to drill into!
Plus, you can use all the stuff in the firewall to "locate" the exit point of the hole you're going to drill. Yeah it's a pain, but it's more of a pain in the neck (literally) than "technically hard".
When I punched out the firewall plug, I used a hammer & punch to knock it "in" towards the engine. Any '86 guys here with auto trannies want to verify that the plug exists?

My buddy did a swap in his 92 and there was no grommet either. Nobody that I've ever talked to who did the 5-speed swap was lucky enough to just have to pull out a grommet... we all had to cut holes. I don't know what that grommet is for, and why some cars have it, but I can't imagine it's for the clutch.

no kidding sherlock. I know exactly where it is. I also know that the factory 5 speed cars (I have a couple of those too) have a 2nd reinforcement plate welded to the firewall on the outside that the automatic cars don't have. The 5 speed cars have more differences from the automatic cars than people realize, so I find it highly unlikely that somewhere after 85 and before 92 that GM decided to make the cars the same and just add a rubber grommet.

After working in a stereo shop for a short time, I found that almost every car has a place to sneak a wire through.
Thirdgens definitly have a few places to pull some 8awg through.
Some cars even have places to pull 4awg through, some have good power taps on the interior fuse panel......but that's still a little 'hack' IMO considering you're pulling power through two fuses. The battery is the only place to connect to in my book.
After awhile, I found myself using my 'fishing rod' more and my drill less and less.

My buddy and I drilled in the spot right under the brake master cylinder. Its really easy to hide the wire under the hood doing this.
