Cubic feet in well area

I have searched for this subject with no results, but if you can get me a link, it will be much appreciated.

I want to put a system into my bird, but first comes the motor. So I've got some time to figure out what I want to do. I was wondering if anyone knows how many cubic feet are availble for a box. I haven't decided what speakers to go with, but I'm looking along the lines of 10's. I think that I want to build a box that holds two, at about 1 cubic foot each.

Before anyone tells me to measure, I have to let you know that my struts are out, and I have a bad back, and no one to hold the hatch.

Thanks in advance, Stingerssx

Use a hockey stick, broom handel, or something to hold the hatch up.

I'll do some measuring when I get a chance to see what you have to work with.

Generally, the box you want to build is easily done, people have put 12's and 15's even in the hatch area.

Do a search for custom boxes for some pics.

You can even fit 18's in the well if you really try. There is a box on here somewhere it's a black background picture that gives the measurements for famous hatch well box. I would try to find the link for you but my crappy dialup would take awhile for searching.

there is tones of space back there, especially if you use fiberglass. I think I got like 3.5 cu ft and the box comes up flush with the over axle hump. there is a guy on cardomain with 4 12's and he made the box go up even higher, right to the seal, and he had like 5 cu ft, also went half way up the axle hump

I agree with OP, that's a heavy hatch! If you have a bad back, there is no need to mess around with that beast!

Spend the $65 and get new struts, it's worth every penny. Using a hockey stick or whatever isn't worth risking being slapped in the head by that 1 ton glass.....at least it feels that heavy when I carried mine from my car to the shed!

When I parted out my T/A, I sold the rear struts for something really cheap, like $25 or something, new parts too! Peek in the classifieds here and there. You might luck out.

I feel bad about parting out that car, but at the time I was paying my rent with the profits from parts sales....what a life!

I got a box from our distributor at work and it has (had, I chopped off the bottom) 1.6 per side, w/ a divider. So we chopped off the bottom, which put it resting on the ledges, and gave me about 1 cu. ft. per side. so figure it is at least 3 cu. ft. here is a pic of the box...if you make it flush w/ the gas tank hump, you'll prolly cut off .4 or so.

i was able to get around 1.0 cu ft from the bottom well alone. there's much to be had if you're good at cutting angles or fiberglassing

You can cheat though. You can just make the box taller then the well to get more Cubic feet. My subs needed 1.15' of air for optimum performance. All we did was make the box stick out higher and put some support along the flat part and a board on top to make it look clean. Came out nice actually.

My boxes are just about 1.5 cubes per side, for a total of 3 cubes. If you lower them so that they're flush with the well, you can still squeeze out almost 1 cube per sub.

The box on the left had about 1.25 cubic feet per side, the one on the right had 1.5:
