My 6 Sub Setup - Any Good?
Hi guys, I'm putting a stereo in my 86 T/A, which i am currently about 50% through, I have made front & back sub boxes, all i need now is to put the splits in buy some amps and do a whole heap of glass work.
Please tell me what u think
Front
2 x 15" with 4" port facing into back of seat
1 x 12" Between front seats with 2" Port facing up
Rear
3 x 12" with 2 x 4" Ports facing up at either end of the box

looks nice... but why did you use different-sized subwoofers?
you can fit 2 15's in the well you know...
Is the front box separated? all the speakers have their own chamber?
I am personally curious if this would sound better than simply getting two extremely nice 15's or 12's and giving them the equal amount of power that you will be running through all this....
e.g. say you run 2,000 rms watts through all 6 of these woofers... I wonder what it would sound like if you had some earthquake subs that were rated at 1,000 watts rms and that's all you had? hrm... I like your porthole location too, good work.
also... where are your non-subwoofer speakers? but I guess... yeah, who really needs those puny things anyhow?

enjoy your rattles...and possibly for ultimate bragging rights the blown back window
Looks very nice... Just curious got a better pic of your wheels, and maybe one of the cockpit interior???

the front box is made with seperate chambers for the subs, and yes i often wonder about just having 2 "*** LIKE" mega subs in the back, it would probly sound louder, but i must admit i love the look of lots of subs, hehehehe
as for the other speakers, i will be getting 3 pairs of 6" splits on set will go in the front and the other 2 will be in the sail panel area 1 facing front, theother facing back.
and becuase the whole setup is not yet comlpeted i am also wondering if i should get 2 15"s for the back, hmmm.
here's a pic of my car showing the wheels & the other mods i've done to the exteriour, eg, wing, knight rider light, wheels, funcional shaker.
also a pic of the interiour will be adding a 4th gen console down the track to make it a bit newer looking

in the first pic i didnt even notice the right hand drive!!! Very nice ride man...As for the speaker selection IMO 15's alone just dont cut it, They are big and somewhat slow, and need a pair of 10s or 12s to back them up.
the wheels are ZENETTI 18x9, one of the only rims i could get in australia in 18" for the T/A
Being from Australia there is not much in the way of car audio, we have all the major brands plus a few smaller ones, yet none can get amps that would do the job for my system under $2000 per amp.
I was looking at the BOSS stuff, is that any good. in particular the Monoblock gear. they seem good spec wise, is there any dangers with this brand???
Trending Topics
I wouldnt touch a BOSS amp with a 10 foot pole.... But you have a lot of speakers to find power for, probably gonna be expensive anyway you do it.... I have never been a real big fan of Rockford amps, but they do the trick for subs, that i will say for them, and there should be tons of em on ebay.

say what? I've never heard that one before! if you get a good set of 15's, (not lightning audio) then they shouldn't be any slower than a 10.... you give it the right amount of power and you won't be sorry!
well. I take that back, you will be sorry, that you didn't do it earlier, and that you soon become deaf in all senses of the word....
plus, having 15's kicks *** regardless... join the few who have them... I don't think many people want to devote their ENTIRE rear well/t-top storage deck area to a subwoofer box...
some day I want to find out the volume of my box... it takes two people to lift it out of my car!

I like the sound system. It goes good with your color scheme especially. I also like the interior very nicely done. I think the big ol wing and those wheels are a bit much for a firebird but your opinion is the only one that matters right.

I also agree that one or two "godlike" subs would work much better than those crap subs, mismatched at that.... but it's an interesting setup to say the least.
The wheels are ok, the shaker is kinda neat. Seems an airplane landed on your trunk though, might want to look into that.
Yeah, I'd definitely stay away from BOSS.

LOL, yeah it's funny how most americans don't like my wing. but it seems to be quite accepted down under. hehehehe.
is there any good amps that are good value and high power. should i just go for 2 alpine 1000wat monoblocks.

AudioBahn sucks!
All show, no go
They sound terrible.
But they do pound
So If you want SPL and flames and neon and chrome and other kiddie stuff go AudioBahn.
If you want good ground pounding SQL go with a pair of xXx or Brahma subs powered by a JL Audio, PG Xenon or better

woah!
Not a fan of the wing at all, but other than that (and the wheels IMO arent "perfect" for the car, if it was mine), gotta give you LOTS of credit for the work you've done!
Neat job!

I was thinking the same thing about the wing.
It doesn't look terrible on the car, maybee just a little mismatched for the body style. Anyone from the states wouldn't be into it because of the cars that started that trend, you all know what I'm talking about!!
It's not the cheeziest wing I've ever seen, infact it might fly on a Grand National drag car or similar body style (no pun intended)
I realized, before I even read the posts, that the car is a RH driver and it's very likely to be quite a hit wherever it was (Australia).
Those rims look good and the interior is well done.
I would personally suggest a JL Audio monoblock 1000/1 or several smaller ones. Those amps can be wired to 1.5-4 ohm loads and still deliver the SAME rms power within that range. That's what most people don't understand about these amps....2 ohms or 4 ohms makes NO difference in power output. That flexibility is what you need with all of your speakers, along with all of the ways you can tune the sound from a JL amp. Being a Digital amp, it won't tax your charging system....since you will be looking for all the power you can get. Hard to find on ebay, but worth the cash either way. Nothing beats real power.
If your 12v system can't provide the power those amps need on top of the rest of the circuitry, now is the time to upgrade your alternator, wiring and batteries.

hrm, I have heard nothing buy good stuff on Audiobahn... interesting... they may be a little overpriced though, is the only thing.
LOL, the funny thing about my wing is even the poeple who think it looks funny on the car think it looks great when the car is actually driving..... that's good i guess, the best part about the wiing for me is it's very functional, it has cut my tracking / bump steer down by half.... ALL HAIL THE WING. hehehe:hail:
with the stereo, i still only have 1 battery, a 100amp alternator & a 50 farad cap. if i go D class i won't need much more power, but i was still thinking of getting a second battery in there & possibly just run 2 alternators.
It looks like JL is the way to go, I have seen it say 1.5-4ohm & thought it was a misprint, WOW so it actually maintains it's max power even upto the 4ohm. I gotta get me one of those, or two
92Transam - The Shaker was on the car when i bought it, however i will take some photo's tomorrow, i'll even remove the shaker & show the air cleaner assembly. it has to be the best bonnet hole i have seen, the edges around the hole have been rolled down, it looks pretty neat.

My ***... I didn't think even a power plant used a 50 farad capacitor! You learn something new everyday! (but obviously you meant 1 farad, because that's the most common)
serious car audio people usually have the equivalent of 3 farad or less of capacitance.... (capacity?) hehe

More than likely it's a .50 F
Yes, capacitence is correct, I've never heard of capacitors having capacity...or inductors having inductivity, resistivity...you get the picture
Remember the most important capacitor of all.....the battery.

Audiobahn doesn't provide a lot of performance for the dollar. Their subs get loud, but sound like ***. Their amps are over rated. But it's amazing what chrome plated flames can do for your bottom line...
People who like Audiobahn are people who want a bangin' system that looks great. People who are really looking for quality don't have audiobahn.
well that's good to know about audiobarn. As for my cap, it was a typo, it was meant to say 15 farad, NO not 1.5, but 15f., it's a big square one with digital display and a 4 way distibution block too.

Most of those large square caps have such a high ESR that they're virtually useless.

uh... 15 farad... that's the biggest car audio capacitor I've ever heard... as a general rule (or so I thought,) you go about 1.0 farad for every 1,000 RMS watts for your system. I personally do not have a cap right now, but I am pondering either a second battery or a batcap, but I am astonished that there is no indication of power draw when I play my system... no lights and the battery indicator doesn't move either... at least while the car is running, (the battery dies after about 30 minutes of jammin' out)... I want to design a dual-battery setup, or something that stops my battery-to-amp connection before it gets too low to start my motor...

That very brand cap is what taught me about high ESR and how useless they can make the product. I used to sell that brand of cap (only we only stocked the 10 or 15 farad model), never once did I see it outperform a normal 1 farad cylindrical cap.

I don't like the 14.4 rating either... because my alt is usually at 13 or so... plus if your car is off... then what the hell

Its funny that nobody ever mentions the JBL on ikesound.com. That is such a great amp for us in the states, but do they ship to australia? Another brand i hardly hear anything about memphis. kinda pricey, but my memphis mojo is 3000 watts RMS at 1 ohm and can go half ohm stable. granted, its a 1300 dollar amp, but you could run all those subs off the one amp probably. or howabout a planet audio or a soundstorm (cheap and powerful). i dunno what you can get there, but these are all great amps.
**edit** meant to mention as well that rockford along w/ several other companys (stinger, etc) make up to 45 farad caps

entirely too lazy to read all the posts..but i noticed a suggestion bout 2 quality subs w/lotsa power..i gotta suggest 2 jlw7's, or 2 titanium series eclipses, either of which can handle easily 600 - 700 rms...and i think they'd destroy the 6 sony's you appear to be running, both in spl and sqpl

Damn, I loved the car BEFORE I saw the interior! And a right-hand-drive!!! I love it! Any under hood shots? I'd love to see how that was handled!
I have 2 Audiobahn 12" subs... and I have no complaints! They sound nice and clear (with a good amp and lots of tuning), and get very loud without much distortion. Mine are 2 years old though... maybe they went to shyt recently?
I have found that a lot of speakers and amps use the P.M.P.O. rating system. That's how they get away with selling 800w tiny computer speakers and the like.
