mine fit in the compartment in the back, side. Had to take the cardboard box out for mine... x541 is the one I have, for size comparison anyway...

It's be held in by styrofoam sheets wadded up, tightly packed. Amp is very stable... I can actually hit it and it moves enough to dampen vibrations, that's it. Gotta make sure it can still breath out of the fan in/outlets though.

If you get the good stuff. Get heavy duty stuff from a hardware store. I never had a problem.

You don't even have to drill into the hump. Remove the side plastic from your car. Buy steel strip stock from Home Depot in the hardware aisle. Then make brackets to go from the side of the car (behind the plastic), to bend down flat against the carpet, and stick out in the passenger area. Then you can bolt your board to those homemade brackets.

i personally (with my $300+ amp) will never trust velcro to the forces of a car cornering with the kinda weight that an amp has

Do you have T-tops? If so then you can use the 2 little anchor bracks under the carpet that are used to hold the T-top bag in place above the gas tank. They mine have a pair of threaded holes in them for the anchor screws. I've never looked to see if these are standard on all thirdgens with and without T-tops, but it might be worth checking. Of course, if you've already checked under the carpet and there weren't any brackets, then you're probably out of luck. Here's a quick pic of one of them (sorry about the crap in the background, I'm just in the process of installing the last bit of sound deadening material in my car):

I had mine on an angled shelf built above the left sub when I was running 2 12's. Then I took one of them out, and I just put the amp down overtop of the hole, and had all the wires going down inside the box. I cant find a pic of the shelf right now, but here is one with the amp sitting level.

This other one is from the 86, and you can see that both boxes are constructed pretty much the same. The only difference is, on this one the amp is on the underside of the top board. Now that's just sexual.

I've got a box of 12's and the amp in my trunk, nothing is bolted down, it's a pretty small trunk so the box has dosen't move much, and the amp stays right beside it on an angle, not bolted down. I've taken some hard turns, done doughnuts, spun out, the amp/box haven't moved, so I figure it's not really that big of a deal and even simple velcro will hold it in place.

It wouldn't help if you were on a track pulling higher G's, but if your car is doing that maybe it shouldn't have that extra weight in it =)

Whatever you do, don't bolt it to the top of the speaker box like the morons down here do. I would bolt it to the side like 87tpi

The Q-logic box would be sitting right on top of it then, wouldn't it? I don't think that's a good idea. My understanding is that most Kenwood amps don't get too hot, but that would certainly be the ideal situation for them to overheat and clip or go into protection mode.

Have you considered putting it in your rear seat? It's not that tricky, I just did it with two amps and a crossover. I'm waiting on a 4th gen seat set to swap over otherwise it would already be in my car. I'll post more pics when it's done, but here's one of the amps mounted in the seat w/o the crossover and before putting the cover back on (the 4th gen cover is the same fit so I'll just slip that one over and cut out the holes so that the amps and crossover are visible).

No No NO.!.!. Even if you account for clearance now, if you have an accident (like getting rear ended, nothing you can do about that) you're just begging to have the tank punctured by one of those screws. Not a good thing.

And a bit of general advice. Don't mount the amp to the box. It's just asking for bad solder connection in the amp. And if you just have to mount it to the box, under stand you are more then likely cutting short the life of the amp.

Sure thing, it shouldn't be too long from now. They'll be here shortly once I know whether or not they will be available. For now maybe I can find you a pick of them installed in my current seat (no hole cut out, but I did a test fit and you'll probably get the idea from that).

Im gonna add...Never drill near the gas tank. You can lay wood under the carpet and drill to that. When I had my T/A I just used HD velcro.
