Steering Wheel controls....not the PAC thing....

Does anyone have a way to adapt the steering wheel controls for an 89 Turbo Trans AM without using the PAC transmitter or other similar remote devices?

undecided so far. There is an aftermarket deck in already but im am most likely going to swap it out with a nicer product and one thats hopefully compatible with the steering controls....

you would have to find a headunit that supported a WIRED remote, sony and pioneer have these...

then you'd have to basically tear apart this remote, and wire it into your steering wheel stereo control wires...

good luck.

there's a reason why they make that PAC box... but I also don't like the idea of it just repeating an IR signal...

I think stereo's should come with RF remotes anyhow, so I can control them from like 20 ft away.

wiring into a "wired remote stereo" won't work, because the factory 'steering wheel control' is one wire, which pulses a signal.

so then he'd have to actually open up the steering wheel and get to the buttons themselves... and with a little electronical know-how... he'd have to wire them to the new wired remote ... assuming that none of the buttons on the wired remote use ***** or dials... cuz then you'd have to do some pretty crazy stuff...

like I said, there is a reason they made that PAC thing.

it's not quite that easy man.

you gotta remember that all those wires in the steering column spin when you steer, so what you're proposing probably won't work.

yes, there IS a reason why they made the SWI-X

yeah clearly doing it without that device is next to impossible...

but you could probably buy a microcontroller that does the same thing for much cheaper... if you knew what you were doing...
