What ohm is a home theatre amp?
I have a KLH surround sound subwoofer, with an 8" speaker in it. It sounds pretty decent, so I had a thought... I'm going to see how it sounds in my car using an inverter!
Don't tell me not to, I'm bored. This isn't permanent or anything, just sheer boredom
I was wondering though, what OHM is the amp most likely? The speaker doesn't say, nor can I find it on the amp anywhere. Someone told me that home audio uses high OHM's, like 8 or 16 or something like that.
I ask because I have many 8" subs sitting around, but I don't want to cook anything!
If my question makes no sense, feel free to e-smack me

That's it, it was 6. Totally random. Will I hurt the speaker or amp if I put a standard car audio one in there?

depends, whats the voice coil configuration? you can wire a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub, which is pretty common in car subwoofers, to an 8 ohm load

Well, the amp is a single vc setup, and if it's 6ohm, could I wire a dvc sub to match that?

You might be ok with driving the amp with a 4 ohm load though, kind of like how you can drive some car amps past their rated limits.
Why are you so worried about breaking something anyway? The sub won’t have any more/less power going to it than it already does in your house.

Well, the sub blew that was in it... I had it a little loud. So a single voice coil 4 ohm sub would be best suited to it?

How big is the box? Is it ported/sealed? Those two things will have a hand in what sub you can choose to get more or less the same results. You're also going to want to avoid power hungry drivers (ie high output car drivers) because odds are that the amp probably isn’t that high output. You might want to poke around parts express (.com) or post on a home theater board as to where you can buy 6 ohm drivers.
As for 6 vs 4 ohms, your amp might be ok with a 4 ohm load. There’s really no way of guaranteeing it unless you call the manufacture and they probably won’t be able/willing to tell you.

Ahh, got ya. It's a 1cf ported box. I'm just looking for something to replace it, nothing crazy expensive or anything!
