legact amps; any good?

so, i did a system install this past weekend, and turned out that my concord amp i was planning on using either isnt working properly, or just isnt powerfull enough. It doesnt seem like it can run the four channels, and it wont even power just 2 of my speakers when i put the volume past half(or even at half) on my ipod.

So i need a new amp, and i really prefer to get one cheap. A frined of mine said he is gonna give me his kicker amp he doesnt use, but i dont think he'll ever remember, lol

So i was looking at legacy amps, i know they are cheap and cant be the best, but how do they perform? I dont need anything breathtakeinh, just something that comes out loud and clear.

I have a 3000 Watt Legacy Red Mono D amp and the bitch hits hard. I have had for over a year now and I have never had any problems with it.

First question is how experiance with car electronics are you? If not I would highly suggest try looking up things like reading RMS and stuff like that. I came a long way from being a noob with this stuff back in the day. Really wished I did do my research before I went through 3 systems in my current ride. I also bought the legacy amps because they where cheap. I had to learn in the end that they where really kind of crappy. if you are looking for accuracy don't go with them. Also before you make any purchase do google searches on reviews for any amps to see what others say about it.

Personally for a mid range speaker amp I prefer kenwood. Great amps for the money. Though they don't generally make a great subwoofer amp. Good luck.

im not a master yet, but i do get better as i go, lol. I haeva pretty good bass amp for now(rockford fosgate punch 45). Its just the speaker amp i need. I know that a lot of amps claim toput out a lot of power when in reality they dont. I think after hearing what you all have said ill stay away from the legacy amps.

thanks

OK, let the bashing begin! I purchased a high dollar amp and subs. I forgot the name. Soon after the warrenty left the amp fried. It actually caught on fire. So I had the sub in a box and nothing to power. So, I went to JC Whitney and ordered a Legacy pre amp and Pyramid Artic Series Amp, 2 channell, 1600 watts. I put in in yesterday and have to keep turned down. It is deffinetly driving those subs. I have it down low and you can still tell I have it. Havent pumped all the way up but with pre amp and amp it is clear and sound good. The head is a pioneer super tuner(as all my cars I have ever had) pushing 90 watts. Might buy another amp to drive speakers, but Im over 40 and already deaf.

what company was it rideon? are you sure you did not wire it wrong causing it to fry? if it was a good amp like you said it would have low failure numbers.. legacy is garbage.. pyramid is garbage.. there can be better amps bought for the money.. like jtufts posted.. hifonics is a nice budget amp.. so is the PG amp.. i dunno about how well pioneer amps are though i wouldn't buy one from them.. dont be cheap with an amp.. spend the money and you will be very happy.. i have my memphis amp and couldn't be happier

No, it was just a high dollar piece of %$#@! I ohmed out to make sure I wasnt shorted to ground and everything was fine. I removed the other amp and installed the pyramid with the legacy preamp, and it sounds fantastic. The subs are hitting clear and the preamp works great. I was surprised, I thought the high dollar crap sounded good, but the pyramid sound great and even LOUD it is clear. But lets face it, if you took 10 amps apart and put them on a table, most of the parts are the same. Brand names are just that, brand names!

build quality is usually the biggest factor.. in your case maybe you got that 1 out of 100 that goes wrong with a high dollar.. cause thats always possible.. better companies rate there amps right on the head or they are underrated... cheaper companies seem to overrate their amps and the amps dont put out even close to what RMS rating is

Ya it's fun to learn how to do this stuff, and really makes the system more enjoyable if you do it yourself.

Just read up before you begin, and see how things are suppose to be wired. Learn the tricks and all that.
