T-Top speaker Idea

Hey i had an idea today riding in my 91 t-top. i was thinking about the sounds system and had an idea to install some 6 1/2 or 5 1/4 inch speakers in the T-bar. has anyone done this or heard of it?

Re: T-Top speaker Idea

You mean directly above you pointing down?

That would mess up your imaging pretty bad.
It would sound like everything is coming from above. Unless I'm not understanding what you mean?

Re: T-Top speaker Idea

I think your imaging still wouldn't sound right. Having them in-between the visors would also have the speakers too close together.

The best place for the mids/tweets would be in the kicks. Each side pointing up toward the center of the car about head level.

edit, just reread what you typed.

So 1 speaker toward the front of the T-top pointing toward the back and the other toward the rear of the T-top pointing forward. ya, that would really make everything sound odd.

Re: T-Top speaker Idea

One problem will be with a speaker so close to behind you it will sound like the concert is coming from behind you. That's why most people who build SQ systems recommend not even installing rear speakers, and focus on your front stage instead. Here is a nice FAQ regarding rear speakers.

im 5' 9" and the roof isn't that far away from my head now... so you wouldnt be able to tilt your head b/c u'd have to mount some type of encloser..

it wouldn't look good aaand....
ive never heard of spkrs directly above your head

Why not go 80s pontiac fiero style or bmw style and mount them in your headrest of your seat. They would have to be small, possibly tweeters, but it would work better and be more concealed than whatever you are talking about.

Ever wonder why they don't do that anymore?

Miata M-Editions did that for their entire Gen 1 Miata production range. Dunno about after that. I actually kind of wonder why they don't do it anymore.

Re: T-Top speaker Idea

One possible reason is you're totally ruining your soundstage by putting speakers directly behind your head.

It will always sound like the concert it directly behind you.
Plus the speakers they put int those head rests are only like 3.5's. So no midbass of any kind, and really easy to distort.
