replace the speakers, if they are original there probably isnt any surround left. if you are on a budget pioneer base model speakers are decent for the price, if ur looking to spend about 200-250 for all 4 polk dbs are pretty decent all around, if u want more bass the kicker ks series at about the same price. but everyone has their own opinion, i worked for circuit city for 3 years as a stereo installer and those were the best sellers

Some great bang for the buck speakers if your looking slightly 'higher end' are Alpine Type S speakers like we have at Best Buy. But like Jeff91 said, Pioneer's are decent for the price, or even Kenwood's. I wouldn't recommend Sony's, just not good all around sound. I personally ran Infinity systems in my Camaro's... which we sell at Best Buy.
The rear Speakers are EXTREMELY easy to replace. That little 'hanger hook' by the rear seats, just remove that screw and take that carpet'ed panel and slide it up and wa-lah, there's the speaker. Remove 4 screws and the speaker is out.
As for the front speakers, still easy. Remove about 5 or 6 7mm bolts along the front underside of the dash, you may have also have one or two bolts up along the windshield in the defroster vent. After all the bolts are out, the whole entire dash upper dash will slide out towards you.

speakers are 4x6's on the dash and 6x9s in the back. as far as a subamp install, it is a pretty straight forward project the only issue that you will run into is that the plasic on a 22 year old car can tend to get a little brittle so you have to be careful when you remove the plastic panels. I have seen plenty of installs where someone just tried sliding the wires under the panels and for the most part that doesn't work. the wires ultimately work their way out.
