This sucks....

So this kid I bought this camaro from had some speakers in the back of the car... He had a really tiny 40wx2 amp in the front aswell.

Every time you would shut off the car the radio would lose all presets. So I descided to check all of the wireing out to the radio head unit. I get it there and its a ****ing mess!!! This kid had stuff so ****ed up not even me, who has had experiance wireing in radios could ficure out. Wires that are all colors attached to wires of diffrent colors uhhh its a mess.

So i ditch the rear speakers because they are junk and go to rewire the head unit, which was a mess. I got every thing hooked up and it wont turn on or nothing. Now I am pretty much pissed.

Now my question, How hard would it be to rewire my 4 standard speakers? Should I just get some cheap wal-mart 16 Guage to do it? This sucks its all messed up.

Have you double checked that the 2 vehicle wires that you selected to power your headunit (one switched and one constant power) are live?
Is the headunit grounded properly?
Most headunits have inline fuses. Are they OK?

PS;as for running new speaker wiring, the front is really easy. Just pop off the dash pad. About a half dozen screws, be sure not to drop any down the defrost vents. If you have trouble getting the wire from the speaker locations to the headunit, simply straighten out a coat hanger and tape the wire to one end and feed it through the dash.
I have little knoweledge about the back speakers, but most of the wiring runs front to back under the carpet along the doors. You'll likely need to remove some trim (the kick panel, door sill plate trim, and rear side panels). This should give you access to the rear speakers from the headunit.

Re: This sucks....

ive had quite a few cars withs previous owners that have done this. I have always just ran new speaker wire to the speakers and tucked it neatly under all the trim pieces. If you can't figure out the power problem you could always just run a power wire from the battery to the radio. the only annoying thing about that is that you would have to turn the radio off every time you shut off the car but the radio also wouldn't lose memory.

Re: This sucks....

It sounds like the constant is properly hooked up...probably both wires are spliced together on the ignition ro constant isnt hooked up at all...easy fix=run a new constant wire straight from the battery...harder fix=turn car off and use a 12v test light and see which wire is the constant and hook it up properly...

for running new wire to the rear speakers try to electrical tape the rear speaker wire to the new stuff and use it as a snake to pull the new wire thru...if you end up running it in a new location try to run the 2 wires with one another and DO NOT WRAP(twist together) THEM AROUND EACH OTHER....i say this b/c #1 if you run any sort of wiring (A/V cable) along side of the speaker wires it will interfer and cause static and all sorts of problems...#2 if you wrap them you will have the same problem...also never run ur power from your amp along side your A/V cables will also cause static....

good luck, chas

Re: This sucks....

Do you need a wiring chart for the car? What year is it? On the Camaro's you'll have a red and a yellow wire, the yellow wire is the constant, the red is the switched. There's also an orange wire, this is the dimmer. You should go through the fuse box because the remote is slaved to another circuit (I believe the dash lights but don't quote me), the yellow wire is fused with the RADIO fuse. The GM wiring isn't all that complicated, it looks worse than it is when you first see it.
