JVC head unit no-go
I finally got rid of my raggety Sanyo cassette player and bought a used JVC CD player model#KD-S7250.Got it home, bench tested it, everything works.Put it in the car with the help of an installation kit from Crutchfield.Thought I would try it before I button up the dash and NOTHING!!
Retraced the wires, everything's connected correctly, checked the fuses; everything's OK there.Oh yeah, it did work for a second, long enough to swallow a CD LOL.Out of frustration I took the Sanyo back out to the car and IT has power! Checked the connections on the JVC again,no power.Flipped-flopped the battery/ign wires; no good. The owners' book says to push the power and SEL buttons at the same time to clear the memory. This didn't do anything. Is there something I'm missing here or should I just use this thing for batting practice lol.It worked fine when I bench tested it.I really would appreciate any help you guys could give me.Thanx.

I dont mean to question you but did you check the fuse on the back of the head unit. it could have got a power spike if you left the battery connected and blew the fuse on the head unit its self...

I checked it when I checked the radio fuse in the fuse box.I'll check it again though. And by all means "question" whenever you like!I've done a bunch of installations, but this things got me baffled.I'm hoping it's just something dumb I may have overlooked.....

How did you make the connections? Tell me not twist-and-tape. Have you check right at the harness with a volt meter?

What about the detachable face???...sometimes the contacts can get dirty and the face wont light up...try cleaning the contacts.......Its a long shot but you never know
Re: JVC head unit no-go
It's not rocket science, if you have tested the three harness wires (ground, 12 volt ignition switched, and 12 volt constant) and checked the fuse on the back of the radio and everything is good there.
My money is on the radio burnt up.....toss it in the dumpster and start over
Last resort you can bench test the unit again to be safe....heck twist the two 12 volt wires together and touch them directly to positive on the battery and radio ground to battery ground and see what you have.

I'm going to do all of the above, brothers. This thing's getting on my nerves!!
I'll probably attack this tomorrow.Picking up some seats for my 'other hot rod' in the AM,then I'll stop by RipShack to get some stuff.Heck, I'm more concerned at this point about getting the CD that's trapped in this thing! I'll keep you posted....

Re: JVC head unit no-go
UPDATE: I took a spare battery out of my shed and carried it to the car.I twisted the red and yellow wires together to +, black to - and it fired right up. I have AM FM and CD no problem.Too cheap to get a circuit tester,I dug an ancient Realistic cassette player out of the basement just to test the power function.Well the unit has power when I connect the red wire to the yellow (switched 12v)wire,but not when I connect it to the orange (constant 12v) wire.I bought a 'circuit add on' and plugged it into the slot for the dash lights. That should be a constant hot, right?Still no go,but it did make a momentary whirring noise when I pulled out the switch for the dash lights.
Where do I hook up this wire to to get a constant 12v?Other than hard wiring it directly to the battery of course.Back in the day we would just alligator clip it to a fuse clip and be done with it, but I'm not gonna eff with it any further until I get some imput from you guys.I'm stuck like a mo skippy and these 90 degree temps aren't helping either.
Got it! Ran a lead to a slot in the fuse bax where it says BATT. Duh!
Now to secure it in there so it dosen't pop out of socket.Looks like a spade connector should do it. Now for a road test.....

Re: JVC head unit no-go
If you dont want a constant 12v going to it.. rig your radio to a toggle switch. i will give you the power you need yet not drain your battery. You might have to re-pin the universal connector that you bought. but it will fix your power issue.. a little ghetto but if you get one with an led to accent your interior lights (gague lights) it doesnt look half bad and no one will really know...
Re: JVC head unit no-go
your orange wire shouldn't be a constant 12 volts.....your YELLOW should be constant, your red should be switched 12 volts. your ORANGE should hook to your lights... its a dimmer control, so when you turn on your dash lights, it dims the display on the stereo. if you don't mind the display being bright at night, you don't have to use the orange wire at all if you don't want to.
so to recap red goes to power thats on when keys on
yellow goes to constant power
orange goes to lights
blue goes to amp or power antenna if you have one
