Audio noob here, few questions
Hey guys,
I am interested in putting in a system into my car. I have browsed these forums and have learned a lot, but I am still unsure about a few things...
1. The first thing I believe I need is a deck...(iPod plugged into cassette adapter is horrible...I have to hit the deck sometimes to get it to work....). One thing I don't get though, I go to places like Best Buy, and I look at all the decks, and they are like....half the size of the current deck in my car?
I was told they will fit but....what will happen to that extra space above the deck? Is there anything to like...fill it?
2. How hard is it to wire a deck? Do I have to buy some sort of wiring harness SPECIFIC to a Firebird? Should a professional do it?
That's all for now, thanks

The stock Delco unit is 1.5 DIN. The head units you probably saw at Best Buy were 1 DIN. When using a kit, they look fine. Some tend to stick out a bit.
Look here for some examples.

http://www.metraonline.com/

go to cruthfield.com theres is a tab under car audio section called "outfit my car" put your year make and model. get a dash intallstion kit. and a wire harness. its easy everything should be color coated from your new adapting harness to your HU. if you feel uneasy with this. find the wire diagram on your HU (should be with the box, papers,or on the HU itself) and then look at the wire diagram on your harness.

You have two options. You could buy a humount plate or a cheaper adapter. The one in the pic below (right side) is a Scosche (part number GM1516B).
You also need an adapter to plug into the back of your wiring harness that will mate up to the aftermarket unit. The one in the pic below (left side) is a Scosche (part number GM02B). Wiring instructions are on the back of the package.
What is your budget and what do you want fro mthe system? Do you want one or multiple amps? How many subs? What kind of music do you listen to? These are the questions you need to answer so you are happy with the system you buy.

Re: Audio noob here, few questions
They fit fine in my camaro how they come, but if you do have extra room, you can buy a dash kit specific for your car from wal mart or best buy, or really anywhere that has car stereo stuff for like 10 bucks, I had to do that for my Toyota and my girlfriends van lol. It should come with a wiring harness, I just get heat shrink from wal mart and snip the wires, and put them right ones together. It's not too hard, the first time might take a little while but after you do it once putting in stereos is easy. You could use electrical tape if you don't wanna buy heat shrink, but i wouldn't recommend that, unless its just temporary

Walmart adapter 15 bucks easy to install just look for the adapter that says 88 and up general motors and look on the back at the list and find your car's model and year and same thing for the harness easy to do

Here's mine, its a Pioneer DEH-P3100UB. Its nothing special but its better than the stock one by a long way. I was having a problem with the deck sticking out a little as you can see in the pic but fixed it soon after I took the pic.

Re: Audio noob here, few questions
if you go to best buy pick out a head unit that is ipod ready and have them install they will have the parts and everything you need. If my memory serves me correct from mine it will be about 100 bucks after everything is and they can run the cable for the ipod to your center console or glove box then you control with the radio. i would roll with a pioneer. that is usually the easiest to use. I used to sell equipment for best buy and tweeter and install on my own now.
