Question about installing speakers
Question about installing speakers
OK, I have two 6 1/2" 2-way JVC speakers with 240watt max that I want to install in my 84 camaro. I already have 2-12 powered by a 1000watt amp.
Can I put these in my car and where?
I dont know really anything about audio so any input is ok.

Re: Question about installing speakers
you can fit the 6 1/2"s in the rear spots since the factory size was a 6x9". just make an adapter plate and you're good to go. I went that route myself since there was a broader selection of good 6 1/2"s available
Re: Question about installing speakers
Thanks. Do I hook them up just like stock speakers besides the mounting?
I dont believe him but a friend sad that I should hook them up to an amp?
I have 1-10" 600-800 watt sub(I got it from my gf sister) so im unsure of its power and I also have a 1000 watt amp(From a friend)
What should I do

Re: Question about installing speakers
The speakers where the 6x9 are should be easy to make adapters since the 6x9s already bolt to adapters. Basically its just a flat piece of metal.
The previous owner of my car placed placed some 6s' in some panels that are screwed to the kick panels. Personally I hate the location but am getting used to them there. (the one blocks the dead pedal area where I like my left foot to be)
I leave them though because when I got the car that was all it had and a bass box in the back with an amp. I since then installed better 6x9s and another amp.

Re: Question about installing speakers
That would bug the **** out of me. I like to be comfortable and stretch my feet.
I need to know how to go about getting the speakers wired. Do i have to connect the original wires to it or do I wire it to the amp?

Re: Question about installing speakers
That would be up to you. Do you want to run them off the power of the head unit or any extra power of an amp.

Re: Question about installing speakers
I wouldnt hook them up to an amp, just because the improvement you will hear wont be worth installing another amp. Now, as far as wiring goes, get a 9 volt battery, remove your old speaker from the car, hook up a wire from each terminal on the speaker to each terminal on the 9 volt battery. You will notice the speaker "pop" either in or out, when the speaker "pops" and the speaker physically moves AWAY from the magnet, that is the correct hook up, (if it moves IN towards the magnet then the polarity is reversed, switch wires on the 9volt and now it will be correct) look at the 9volt and see which terminal is connected to positive. The wire coming FROM the car that was hooked to that terminal (on your speaker) will be your positive (provided it is not hooked up backwards behind your deck). Just cut the end(s) off the wires (from your car) and wire in 2 insulated (in case one connection comes loose it will not short out your whole system) spade terminals. Install new speaker, replace the speaker cover (NOT grill), and your done. This is the same method we used at the audio shop I used to work at, before I went off on my own.
