GPS / CD / MP3 / FM Combo Units?
Anyone know of a combo head unit that will fit in the din and a half slot in our dashes? I would like to replace my stock FM / Casette unit but have not found anything that will fit in my 91 TA. All I listen to now is an IPOD through an FM transmitter to the original head unit. I would like to have a GPS in the car but I do not want an "add on" with wires across the dash.

there are no 1 1/2 din units like what you're looking for, so your best bet would be looking for a single din flip out unit. should be a ton out there that fit the bill these days.

With a little bit of mods to your console you can fit a dual din stereo, GPS dual din unit into the stock location. My friend (a professional car stereo guy) install a dual din pioneer system for me looks great in plays CDs, DVDs, MP3s, and is Bluetooth capable. You can a add backup camera if you want.

1ADan - I looked at some flip ups but did not like how they would hide the Heater/AC control panel.
Ringo234 - That sounds lika a good idea. Once you mod the mounting area, could you switch back to original config? I ruled out the 2 din units because all the literature said they would not fit. What model Pioneer did you put in? Does the GPS require an external antennae and where did you mount it (I have a convertible)?
Thanks to both of you.

you just need to get another face plate from the junk and you go back to stock.
It would be simple.
I don't remember that P/N, but it does have GPS built in although a plug by iPhone into now and use the phones Navigation instead. It does have an external GPS antenna.
I mounted my where the T-Tops meet on the the windshield along the headliner I think its been a long time but radio guy a great of concealing the cable.
Not sure how that would work on convertible though.
Good Luck.

If I find a unit I like, I think I'll keep my stock faceplate with the old AM/FM/Cassette and get one from a JY car to modify for the larger size. As fo the antenna, I may route a lead up the back of the dash and mount the antenna head between the air vents on the top of the dash. If it would fit, I could also route it to the back of the rear view mirror by coming up the windshield pillar where the mirror wiring is routed.
Thanks for your help.

Re: GPS / CD / MP3 / FM Combo Units?
I am one of those old farts that does not use my cell phone for anything but a phone call (not while driving, mind you). No texting, no apps, no nothin'. It disturbs the enjoyment of driving my TA!
I looked into the Pioneer units but they seem to be discontinued. The only other manufacturer of 1.5 DIN units I found was "Pyle" that I know nothing about. Oh well, I'll just keep guessing where I am going. Its worked for over 40 years!

Re: GPS / CD / MP3 / FM Combo Units?
I went with a 1 DIN unit from JVC without GPS. I will need to do some fit work to get it to look right but it was my best choice. I could live without the GPS but I really wanted a rear USB port to hook in my IPOD and run the unit from the head unit without having any exposed wires. I plan to make a holder for the IPOD either in the space below the radio or inside the ash tray cavity since I am a non-smoker.
Thanks to everyone for your ideas.

Re: GPS / CD / MP3 / FM Combo Units?
ive got a head unit that allows me to plug in my ipod and control it from the radio itself. i have the cable run under the consol and the plug is in the center storage area. i just plug in my ipod, close the lid and go. no wires/ipod to be seen.

That's also an option for me. After I get the head unit installed. I will mess around with all 3 of these locations but so far, the console is #1, the ashtray is #2, and the dead space below the radio is #3.

with it being in the center console, its out of site so people are less likely to try and break into the car.
