4x9 to 6x9 dash

I am wanting to put aftermarket speakers in my 91 Camaro RS. I looked up the dimensions for the speakers, getting the result of the speakers under the dash being 4x9. I read that getting aftermarket 4x9 speakers is a waste because speakers that size are not really that great.

So I ran across speaker size adapters. I honestly don't really understand how they would work. Can anyone help me out on this? What kind of speakers do y'all have under the dash in your camaro and/or trans am?

Thanks for the help!

Take the dash off and take a look at where your stock 4x6" speakers are and you'll be able to answer your question of if you can fit 6x9" speakers in there.

Re: 4x9 to 6x9 dash

They are 4x6's under the dash pad and 6x9's or 5x7's in the rear. The only speakers I know that will swap into the front are 4 inch round speakers.

Here is a good website with free shipping sonicelectronix.com

The 4x6's are not that bad i have sonys in my truck and JVC's in my Trans am. I like the JVC speakers better.
Hop this helps

Re: 4x9 to 6x9 dash

I managed to fit shallow mount 6.5 in the front dash and sound was dramatically better.I used some 1/4 inch thick rubber grommets as a spacer between the dash pad and the speaker so it didnt crush the surround and put screwed the dashpad back on nice and tight.

I originally made 6.5 kick panels but they were big for the components i got and would no longer fit once i converted to a stick car so i had to find an alternative and 4x6 just dont cut it for me.

The 6x9s in back can swap out with a 5x7. My trans am had 5x7's originally but I swapped in JVC's 6x9's in.

Re: 4x9 to 6x9 dash

I dont know if you want to cut into your dash but i did and surface mounted Pioneer 6x9s in. I have a wall with 4 Kicker L5 12s and needed front stage that reflected off the window.
