Stereo draining battery / wrong wiring
Hi guys,
When i first got my car 8 years ago i paid a guy at a local auto shop to wire up a new CD player as my car had no stereo at all when i got it, just a load of wires everywhere. He said he wired it up so it was constantly live, and to power it off all together i would simply clip off the front fascia, and never had any problems.
However, ive recently changed my headunit for a newer one, and because the guy had wired in an ISO connector i simply unplugged my old one, plugged in the new one and it worked straight away. However if i leave the car standing for about 3 days, maybe 4 it wont start ! i traced it to the stereo by seeing how many amps was being pulled from the battery when the car is off, and it was .54, so i unplugged the stereo and it dropped right down to .02
So i had a look at the actual wiring tonight and took the tape off around the connections and hes split the red wire into the yellow wire, so its got two constant 12v feeds going to it at all times, theres no switched wire with the key, and the only other spare wire in that area is a pink one which doesnt seem to do anything, its not live.
So im just wondering how do i solve this problem and stop it running my battery down over a few days.
Thanks,
Scott

First thing you need to do is go back to that radio shop and slap that guy for hacking your wiring up like that when you PAID him for the job!
After you've done that, there are two wires coming out into the radio area. One is a constant 12V wire and the other is switched 12V with key on that tells the radio to turn off when the car is off. Restore the correct configuration and your problem will be solved. Looking at your harness the yellow needs to go to the 12V constant and that red wire that says ACC goes to the switched.

Re: Stereo draining battery / wrong wiring
Thanks mate. Any idea which colour wire is the switched one though ? theres only a couple of other spare wires in there though but they arent live, with the key on or off.
The thing is though, being able to have my stereo turned on with the car turned off is something i like, as i can make KITT talk etc, its only with this new headunit its draining the battery, it doesnt have a clip off front like my old one. but you hold the power button to shut it off and its totally off, there is no standby light or mode etc

Re: Stereo draining battery / wrong wiring
Can anybody help me out. I don't know too much about cars but I had a system in my Lincoln navigator for a while and out of nowhere if you slam the back door or tap the door speaker on the back driver side it's almost like a microphone through the subwoofers.. now when I turn the truck on the speakers just keep going whaaaaaaaaaaaa. I have to shut it off and unplug my battery. It keeps killing my battery also. Plus if I hit the switch for the window you can hear it making a noise almost lowers the messed up sound the speaker is making. I just recently changed all of the door speakers and still same thing. It actually worked till I had to shut the back door again. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.
