Speaker blown or radio issue?
Hello!
I recently bought an '89 IROC. The car has a stock GM stereo, but it only plays sound from the front left speaker... no sound comes from the other speakers, front or rear. Could the stereo be the problem? How much should I expect to pay a shop to diagnose the issue?
Thanks!

im guessing by the fact that one plays, the other speakers are bad. you can futher diagnose it by taking the good one and plug it into the other plugs and if it plays the radio is fine. do you have bose or other performance sound options?

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
Is there any audio whatsoever, such as crackle/hiss/pop from the affected speakers when you adjust volume/fade/balance/power? Usually a blown speaker will make some noise.
My speakers are crap, only driver front is 100%. PassFront crackles, DriveRear distorted, PassRear has nothing. I checked both rears with known good speaker, PassRear ended up with nothing. Leads me to believe that a blown speaker will produce some sound and that my PassRear wiring or the HU is the actual problem

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
The stock delco radios have a a known problem with the right side channels. It is 3 1uf filter caps that fail. If the radio continues to run like this, the IC's for the amp can go bad. Most shops charge $100+ for the repair.

The radio is most likely kaput.
You can get refurbished units(with an AUX input if that is your thing) for not much more than a repair shop would charge to fix yours.

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
Thanks for the info, everybody!
No sound comes from any of the speakers except for the left front.
I want to keep the radio (if I have to replace it) the same as what
is in it now, as I am trying to keep the car in original condition.
There is only one plug in connector on the back of the radio.. and
also an antenna connector. The plug is in the unit securely.
I have looked on Ebay for a radio/tape player like the one I have, but
have not found one yet. I was going to try going to a salvage yard
in town to see what one would cost there, if they have it.
I will post a picture when I get a chance.

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
probably has usuall broken solder joint problems common to thirdgen era delco radios-easy fix for those used to working on these radios. For junkyard replacement, chevy s-10 and astro van used mid '80s model radios well into the '90s,but IIRC,those kept on with the earlier plug style.

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
If the speaker wires ever touch the body it can blow out the output transistors. Depending on how handy you are you can try setting it up on a bench with 12v and a test speaker. Then check the channels with test leads (wires with alligator clips on the ends) to see what you have for outputs. If you're handy with a soldering iron then you can try re-flowing the solder (with flux) to freshen it up as well as replacing the capacitors as mentioned (also, they tend to dry out over time). Make sure the polarities are correct if you replace them. If the volume is still scratchy you can try a spray for that if you can't find a replacement controller.
If all else fails you can replace the output transistors too which is a pretty easy fix as well. The reason for describing the fixes is in case you want to try, plus it may be difficult finding another that works, especially with a tape deck if it has one (belts dry out/fail). With electronics this old it's pretty much a crap shoot unless you go after market or have it gone through, because as mentioned the caps dry out and the cold solder joints become more of a problem on all of them. If you have one serviced try to find someone experienced with tape decks and that will do at least the described repairs, and will warranty their work for a good length of time. Pay for the time needed to re-flow the solder, new caps, belts and anything else that needs it.
IMO, it's just easier an cheaper to go after market and it sounds a lot better too.

Yes, it has a tape deck. I can solder, but I would rather let someone fix it for me.. I don't have much free time for that kind of thing.

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
I'm over the "keeping the stock radio" thing myself. I just plan to offer the stock radio with the sale of the car later on.
Sound of new ones is so much better, more output, plus aux jack and blue tooth, it mixes Ipod songs to roll seamlessly, Pandora, sirus xm .... many features old stereos just don't do.
Just picked up a pioneer w/aux jack, Bluetooth, CD and LED light show .... $107, get the plug adapter at WM, no wire hacking .... stock plugs back in anytime.
Found for $107 on amazon

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
I'll let you know, Santa Wife is giving it to me for xmas
I think I will need to mod it. Hole is only 3.25" high, this thing looks every bit of 4". It may fit in the GTA. I can pick up a sacrificial trim ring somewhere.
Let you know. All the reviews say sound is excellent, but light are too bright and dimming sucks.

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
As long as going to use a double din radio why not go with a GPS system or a pioneer Appradio. I have an http://shop.doubledmods.com/Camaro-D...zels_c1291.htm, it becomes a window for my phone with complete control of my phone with it's touchscreen. By itself its only a radio, with Bluetooth and a backup camera, but plug in a phone and its an mp3 player, an internet browser, GPS navigation system, and a movie player... It's really cool.
I got one on eBay for ~$170.

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
Bringin it back from the dead
I have a GTA style radio (Delco LocII) with an aux jack modification (done last year).
Today driving in to work, I was listening to the radio and my right front speaker crackled and then stopped playing music. (My right rear stopped a week ago, haven't had time to look into it though). So I figured for the hell of it to plug in the aux and listen to my own music.... bingo the speaker works again (all except Right rear). Unplug the jack, only left works-- like this every time. Anyone?
If I can't figure this out, I may have to pick up a monsoon unit with a 4th gen wheel and call it a day, but I want to utilize this thing as I need to focus on my LS swap. Any fixes? Wiring is all new- brand spankin new wires, no splices.

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
Bad filter caps on the amp board of the radio. The right side speaker ones are right under the heat sink and always go bad. Most common problem on these radios. Easy fix. Pop off the purple heat sink and you will see 3 small 1uf caps under there. Replace these 3 and your radio will sound great again. (1UF and pay attention to the polarity!) As for the Issue with the Delco Loc-II sounds like bad wiring in the aux jack connection. I would check all the solder joints in the wiring.

Re: Speaker blown or radio issue?
Correct the green ones. Make sure you pay attention to the polarity of them when replacing them. On occasion the 100uf axial caps (2 for each IC) will go bad, but if its just your right channel 99% of the time its the small green caps.
