Is it possible to put a new stereo player here?

I've got an 85 Sport Coupe that's all original and the last thing I want to do is to remove the classic radio and especially drill into the dash to make some custom mounting stereo.

Is it possible to put one here in the highlighted area without performing any of the aforementioned things?

It is certainly possible to fab up a housing and put a radio there.
What is your idea for running the wires without drilling into the vent housing or the front of the dash?

They make install kits to allow you to install a new stereo in the original location, without cutting or drilling any part of the car or wiring harness, then you could always swap the original back in at a later date.

BTW: If that's a pic of your car, it looks outstanding! Very clean!

i agree. if you put it where you want you would have to drill holes to mount a box and run the wires out the back and into the dash or leave them outside and go under. not very visually appealing

I don't see how having two radios, one much more obviously not stock, looks better than swapping out the original for a clean, damage free, totally reversible aftermarket in the stock location?

What's wrong with your stock radio?

You have a nice clean car. I wouldnt mount anything if it were my car. You can convert your radio to mp3 input. I converted mine myself and ran the input jack in the ash tray. It looks stock. You can upgrade your speakers if you havent already and add an amp in the trunk somewhere. You have a built in EQ on yours, you are set.

It must be a reference pic, he says he has a Sport Coupe with a V6, yet the picture is of an IROC-Z. Note the dash plaque and louvered hood. Good picture for reference though. I dunno, I tend to pick up on the little details like that. Wife hates it when I surf Craigslist and pick apart the cars for sale, saying it's not what the seller claims it is!

Re: Is it possible to put a new stereo player here?

This is just a reference pic, fellas! It's a beautiful car but mine is a 1985 SC. I wanted to have a new stereo so I can plug in my iPod without having to listen to car dealership ads all day, haha.

As for having two radios, it does sound kind of silly when you put it that way.

I was aware you could switch the older radio out with a new stereo that has an audio jack however I figured it would be cool to keep it stock but it would really defeat the purpose if I was to run wires everywhere because I definitely wouldn't start drilling holes into my mint dash.

Are these kits specifically third gen oriented or can I just purchase one from eBay that will do the trick?

This is the perfect match to a mint stock interior in my opinion. Dont even need the fancy light up stuff to have it look nice.

Why don't you have a jack installed like this.

*84TA did mine and it sounds great.

If you're on a tighter budget, one of these will work as well:

Scoshe Mounting Brackets

What's involved with that mod? I have a 2006 GMC Sierra SLE that I'd like to do that to. How long does it take? How expensive?

A cassette tape adapter is an even cheaper option. It turns your tape player into an aux jack for your mp3 player. I've been using them in vehicles for years, their sound quality probably isn't as good as as a real aux jack but its adequate for the price. I see them on ebay for as low as $1.23 shipped but I'd pay a couple bucks more and hope for better quality.

I put in a Kenwood 2Din and bought the Double D Mod ($100 but worth it).

Re: Is it possible to put a new stereo player here?

Buy a kit to install an aftermarket radio, or just us a NICE FM modulator and you can listen to your ipod through your stock radio.

DO NOT do it as you initially thought. It would look VERY tacky(I bought a car that had one like that I had to put back like original.)
